Lessons of the Convoy
Well here we are, the beginning of a new year - welcome to 2025 and all that it may hold for you.
I was sat thinking about how we will each choose to lead our next 12 months. Now, let me stress that my words were deliberately selected: “choose”. How we show up and lead each year - and every single day within it - is within our power to choose. Even if we aren’t deliberate, that will become our choice. This reminded me of two weeks ago when our daughter had passed her driving test and was concerned about venturing out in her car on her own, especially to a destination she’d never driven before.
To try and help build her confidence we suggested that her dad would drive in front to guide her road positioning and she’d follow rather like a convoy (of two!). This didn’t only help her to figure out the complexity of lane changing, but also - and perhaps more importantly - the way to be part of a convoy. My husband, in this instance, was the ‘lead’ driver and Emmy was the ‘following’ driver. Before they set off, I highlighted a few things that I thought would help:
Awareness
A great lead driver is always looking to see where the following car is
Considerate And Kind
It’s important that the lead driver is mindful at traffic lights and junctions - not just thinking of themselves and their route
Timing And Pace
At times, the lead driver will need to pause, stop or just wait
Calm
The following driver must not ignore what they know or start to panic and race, especially is someone gets in between them
Mutual Trust
There must be trust between the lead driver and following driver
Equip
The lead driver needs to behave in a way that also teaches the follower so they aren’t needed in future
We Are All Leaders
The following driver is also a leader of sorts - of themselves
These points relate to us all in life - and for our 2025. It isn’t about having the title of “boss”, “captain” or “leader”, but a way of thinking, our attitude and behaviour. A leader of people needs followers - and followers need aligned leadership. Remember, first and foremost you are your own leader - so be the best you can and lead your year well.
ENERGY
An emotion or energy; a stand-out word / s
Possible
As we look ahead, my word for you is ‘possible’ - perhaps one of my favourite words ever!
The word is from Latin POSSIBILIS meaning "a possible thing or substance; that which may take place or come into being". The meaning hasn’t really changed - it is all about the unknown future and potential. Let’s hope your 2025 is a year of possibilities!
ACTION
Something small that you can do that might make a big difference
Really Want
Think about what you want - what you REALLY want. Write this down. Tomorrow, revisit what you wrote and make it a little bigger and more challenging. You can repeat this until what you write is daring and brave and a little uncomfortable.
PROCESSING
A question to think about and consider (you can discuss this with someone or write your thoughts down)
“Who must be in your year and why?”
Who are your people? Who absolutely needs to be part of your 2025?
I’d love for you to send me your own stories / thoughts about this. Drop me a line with your answer / thoughts on this question
SHOUT OUT
Who / what I think deserves recognition - my gratitude or to be celebrated.
New Diary or Calendar
I love a blank page especially in a diary - you can add whatever you want in it. The new diary or calendar is a chance to plan and structure! A big shout out goes to the each new page!
