How We See | Guess| Go-Giver Leader

Hello there! Welcome to my weekly LEAPS.

You’re receiving this email because you subscribed to my weekly Wednesday feature or our mailing list. Every Wednesday, I share 5 things using our LEAPS approach:

Learn: something new or an idea
Energy: an energy (good or bad) word and it’s meaning
Action: something to do
Processing: a question to consider
Shout out: something or someone that I want to celebrate or acknowledge

LEARN
Something Worth Sharing

How We See

One of the most fascinating things I've learned from facilitating hundreds of sessions is how differently people can see the same thing.

We often begin with a simple exercise: everyone looks at the same image. Firstly, we get everyone to confirm that they believe what they are seeing is the same picture everyone sees.

Then the questions begin.

  • What do you see?

  • What's happening?

  • What stands out?

  • What do you think comes next?

Suddenly the answers start to differ. People notice different details and focus on different elements. Each person starts to create different stories and reach different conclusions. During which time, the picture hasn't changed - the perspective has.

What's interesting is that vision isn't just about our eyes.

While our eyes collect information, much of what we "see" is actually created by our brain. Our experiences, beliefs, assumptions, current emotional state, health, energy levels and past experiences all influence how we interpret what is in front of us.

In other words, we don't simply see the world as it is - we see the world as we are. Yet in life, leadership and business we often assume that because something has been said, it has been understood.

  • Because we see something clearly, others do too.

  • Because the vision makes sense to us, it must make sense to everyone else.

But people don't experience the world exactly as we do, they see through the lens of their experiences, beliefs, fears, hopes and assumptions. When we forget this, we start to guess, we assume, and we fill in the blanks.

This often creates misunderstanding where curiosity could have created understanding. The challenge isn't learning how to communicate more - it's learning how to become curious about how others see.

ENERGY
Focusing on an emotion or energy; a stand-out word / s

Guess

From the Old English gessen meaning "to judge" or "to estimate." A guess isn't a fact. It's an assumption made when information is incomplete. The trouble is that many of us treat our guesses as the absolute truth.

ACTION
Something small that you can do that might make a big difference

Ask to Clarify

The next time you find yourself making an assumption, pause. Then ask a question instead. Curiosity often reveals far more than certainty.

PROCESSING
A question to think about and consider (you can discuss this with someone or write your thoughts down
)

“How might the other person have seen a difficult situation I’ve experienced?”

Think of a challenging situation. What assumptions have you made about the other person - their intentions, actions or behaviour? What information might they have had that you didn't? What question could you ask that might help you understand their perspective more fully?

This question will be added to the Community Space in the Leapers Club for you to share your thoughts.

SHOUT OUT
Who / what I think deserves recognition, my gratitude or to be celebrated.

Curiosity

To the people willing to ask before assuming. To those prepared to listen before judging. To the leaders, parents, colleagues and friends who understand that seeing differently doesn't mean seeing wrongly.

May we spend less time guessing and more time getting curious.
