Try The Big Idea On | Pause | The Art of Reflection
Hello there! Welcome to my weekly LEAPS.
You’re receiving this email because you subscribed to my weekly Wednesday feature or our mailing list. Every Wednesday, I share 5 things using our LEAPS approach:
Learn: something new or an idea
Energy: an energy (good or bad) word and it’s meaning
Action: something to do
Processing: a question to consider
Shout out: something or someone that I want to celebrate or acknowledge
LEARN
Something Worth Sharing
Trying The Big Idea On For Size
We often get told to ‘dream big’, to have ‘big hairy audacious goals’, to ‘think the impossible’…you get the idea. Well, I don’t know about you, but that can often put me right off!
I suspect that while this might work for lots of people, there are others (hopefully) like me that can struggle with being pushed to come up with big ideas off the cuff. I’m guessing that among the reasons for this will be:
Stubbornness - not enjoying the pressure and being told to just think of a big idea
Time and space - to get to your ‘dreams’ we need to park the day-to day stuff
Belief - not always believing in one’s own worth or ability
Lack of self-honesty - it’s not easy to admit what you truly want
Fear of selfishness - it can seem over-indulgent
These are just a few that came to my mind, I have no doubt you could add your own. So what can be done about this? My own learning about the subject is that whenever I’ve wanted something really huge, I need to try it on for size first.
I find that allowing myself to try an idea on, take it off, look at it a little and put it back on the shelf (metaphorically!) for a while, works really well for me. This can look like: sharing a thought with someone, writing it down, sticking pictures on the wall, and so on. By approaching it this way, I can work through the barriers of resistance and remove some of the unhelpful pressures - just like buying the perfect dress!
ENERGY
An emotion or energy; a stand-out word / s
Pause
This is a word that is so valuable and I hear all the time, even when poeple struggle to implement a pause!
It originates from Greek PAUSIS meaning "stopping, ceasing" - developed from the word PAUEIN "to stop, hold back, arrest, to cause to cease".
ACTION
Something small that you can do that might make a big difference
Try Your Idea On
I wanted to encourage you to start trying ideas on for size. As mentioned in my LEARN, you can do this in a variety of ways. It’s a process to keep shaping and refining what you want - because action of any type will always move you a step closer!
PROCESSING
A question to think about and consider (you can discuss this with someone or write your thoughts down)
“How do I make sure I pause and reflect well to be effective?”
This is a topic close to my heart and that of my business partner. We can all beat ourselves up after an event or situation, but how are you making sure you learn and grow from what has been? Do you reflect? What gets in the way? How could you do it to be more effective?
I’d love for you to send me your own stories / thoughts about this. Drop me a line with your answer / thoughts on this question
SHOUT OUT
Who / what I think deserves recognition - my gratitude or to be celebrated.
Live and In Person
I had the huge honour of securing a couple of tickets for Mel Robbins live tour in London recently. There is nothing like sitting in a room with 3,500 other people and feeling the positive energy in the room. I’ve enjoyed Mel’s books and podcast for a number of years - but to get to be in the room with the fun and learnings right in front of you was amazing! Shout out the ‘live and in person experience’!

A: what’s one thing you need to do?
P: what are you thinking / processing?
S: who or what can you shout out?
