Where’s The Evidence? | Adventure | Alchemy

Hello there! Welcome to my weekly LEAPS.

You’re receiving this email because you subscribed to my weekly Wednesday feature or our mailing list. Every Wednesday, I share 5 things using our LEAPS approach:

Learn: something new or an idea
Energy: an energy (good or bad) word and it’s meaning
Action: something to do
Processing: a question to consider
Shout out: something or someone that I want to celebrate or acknowledge

LEARN
Something Worth Sharing

Where’s The Evidence?

My learn this week stems from my own personal self-observation; I have a real thing for ‘evidence’. I’ve been thinking about where this stems from and I believe that it is something that developed in early childhood. I used to hear quite a few ‘mis-truths’ as I grew up and the only way to gain confidence about what was true or otherwise was to seek tangible evidence.

I was talking to someone recently about words and actions being disconnected. We chatted about and the issue of actions (the evidence) not being aligned to what was being promised. In leadership, evidence is especially critical. People look to whoever is ultimately responsible for providing evidence - whether that is feedback, numbers or behaviours. If evidence is lacking or contradictory, relationships, trust and safety are quickly undermined.

When we set goals and strive to achieve, it is equally important to know what the evidence will be of our success - otherwise, how do we really know we’ve achieved what we wanted?

ENERGY
An emotion or energy; a stand-out word / s

Adventure

This week’s word is inspired by my husband - it is his ‘purpose’ word.

Like so many words, it comes from Latin. The word ADVENIRE means "to come to, reach, arrive at". It is formed from AD "to" + VENIRE "to come".

This just highlights that we are all on our own adventures - because we are all travelling on journeys through life.

ACTION
Something small that you can do that might make a big difference

Ask Twice

Quite a specific action for you this week. Roman Kemp (son of Spandeau Ballet member Martin Kemp, radio and TV presenter and author), wrote a book called ARE YOU REALLY OKAY? It encourages us to not only check-in with people, but when asking someone if they are okay, he suggests we need to ask a second time. The approach of asking someone twice is because we very often deflect the first time. When someone asks us ‘…but are you really okay?’, this is when we can reveal that something isn’t quite right. Try asking twice!

PROCESSING
A question to think about and consider (you can discuss this with someone or write your thoughts down)

“What’s important to me?”

This question is really very straight forward - to ask, if not to answer. Be honest and think about what really is important to you and if you are prioritising these things / people.

I’d love for you to send me your own stories / thoughts about this. Drop me a line with your answer / thoughts on this question

SHOUT OUT
Who / what I think deserves recognition - my gratitude or to be celebrated.

‘No’ Without Excuses

As an adult I’ve learned the power of saying ‘no’ when something just isn’t right or I simply don’t want to do something. For a long time I felt I ‘should’ accompany my NO with excuses, rather than just saying ‘no’. Recently I gave a gracious ‘no’ without excuses or justifications and boy did it feel good! A big shout out to the straightforward ‘no’ without excuses, reasons, or justifications.

LEAPS is a process used by our team and clients all the time - and even my own family on a daily basis.

I’ll be sharing a set of LEAPS each week with you and encourage you to do your own version:

  • L: what have you learned?

  • E: what’s your energy / feeling word

  • A: what’s one thing you need to do?

  • P: what are you thinking / processing?

  • S: who or what can you shout out?
