Safe In Their Hands | Vulnerable | Invisible Influence

Hello there! Welcome to my weekly LEAPS.

You’re receiving this email because you subscribed to my weekly Wednesday feature or our mailing list. Every Wednesday, I share 5 things using our LEAPS approach:

Learn: something new or an idea
Energy: an energy (good or bad) word and it’s meaning
Action: something to do
Processing: a question to consider
Shout out: something or someone that I want to celebrate or acknowledge

LEARN
Something Worth Sharing

Safe In Their Care

Last week I underwent a medical procedure to deal with a heart condition. All of the medical team were highly professional, as you’d expect. However, while in the preparation area, the nurse tasked with inserting a cannula into my arm had two failed attempts and began to panic. In walked the surgeon. Clearly seeing a situation developing, he stepped in calmly and said not to worry about it, he’d get it sorted in the operating theatre.

The learn I wanted to share was about the impact he had not just on my stress levels, but also on his whole surgical team. After swiftly inserting the cannula and making light of things - instantly putting me at ease - he addressed his team.

I was fortunate enough to witness a master at work, a true leader and someone that made me feel completely safe in his care before the happy juice was administered. He called his team together and with ease, and a smile presented:

  1. CLARITY: a clear and concise vision

  2. COMMUNICATION: explaining the process he was expecting all to follow

  3. CONFIDENCE: a few possible scenarios that may occur and how they would be tackled

  4. CARE: an opportunity for questions and checking that all are on board

  5. CONFIRMATION: a final check through

His approach made my experience all the better. I have no doubt that each member of his team felt the same - resulting in an all round ideal approach and outcome. While the steps may seem simple and obvious, it’s amazing how many people fail to use and embed them.

ENERGY
An emotion or energy; a stand-out word / s

Vulnerable

While many still see being vulnerable as a weakness, it can be a strength and a catalyst for courage, connection, and personal growth. Brene Brown argues that embracing vulnerability allows individuals to experience deeper connections, build resilience, and live more authentically.

The word vulnerable is from Latin VULNERARE meaning "to wound, hurt, injure, maim". This perhaps helps to explain the ‘old’ way of thinking about it. However, it is only when we expose wounds that they can heal!

ACTION
Something small that you can do that might make a big difference

Be Vulnerable

With the chaos of everyday life, it’s easy to bottle things up rather than share what we really feel. This week, see if you can open up a little and perhaps share a little vulnerability - how you truly feel about something. This could be in conversation or even just write it down. Vulnerability is a muscle that needs exercising.

PROCESSING
A question to think about and consider (you can discuss this with someone or write your thoughts down)

“What is a difficult conversation you need to have (and have perhaps been avoiding) - and with who?”

The question above is pretty straight forward. The second part to it needs to be: “and what’s stopping you?”

I’d love for you to send me your own stories / thoughts about this. Drop me a line with your answer / thoughts on this question

SHOUT OUT
Who / what I think deserves recognition - my gratitude or to be celebrated.

The Courage To Speak Up

I’ve always been someone that speaks up for others - often at the risk of being rejected. If I saw someone being bullied, I would always speak up. I haven’t always been so great at speaking up on my own behalf, this is something I’ve had to keep working on. It is easier in some circumstances than others - and with some people more so than others. I’m shouting out the courage to speak up - and all that do, even when it’s really tough.

  • L: what have you learned?

  • E: what’s your energy / feeling word

  • A: what’s one thing you need to do?

  • P: what are you thinking / processing?

  • S: who or what can you shout out?
