Common Threads of Success
I have had a fascinating couple of weeks full of stories and reflections on significant careers. Last week, for example, we saw Tim Minchin live (Australian comedian, actor, writer, musician, poet, composer, and songwriter - including Matilda the Musical) reflecting on his career. The show had an assortment of photos and stories spanning 20 years. You may also recall me mentioning (because I told anyone that would listen!) I saw Mel Robbins’ stage show, which included her journey from humble beginnings to being included in the 2025 TIME100 Creators List. This weekend just past, I was in the audience for my heroes very last ice show - Torvill and Dean retired after 50 years. Their show, like Tim and Mel’s, was focused on the many ups and downs of their career since being teenagers to the most well-known ice skaters of all time.
So, what do an Australian songwriter / comedian, American author and British ice dancers have in common? Here is a small list of 5 key observations and learnings that I saw in all of them:
Inside Man
Leveraged their contacts and relationships - they didn’t achieve just on their own.Ask
Courage to ask for what they needed or wanted - as well as recognising they didn’t have all the answers.Belief
Even when facing obstacles and objections they had a deep belief in what they were doing - and why they were doing it.Innovation
Doing well known things - writing, music and ice skating - but differently, and in their own style / way.Resilience
Ability to keep going, doing the work and getting back up when facing barriers, resistance and challenge.
While all of them have very different backgrounds and talents, the common threads in their stories are so evident. Personally, I found them all equally inspiring and worth learning from!
ENERGY
An emotion or energy; a stand-out word / s
Growth
Continuing with the them of amazing careers, the word ‘growth’ came to mind.
The word stems from Old English growan (referring to plants) "to flourish, increase, develop, get bigger". Around the 13th Century, the Middle English language applied this to human beings.
As with plants, our growth doesn’t happen without the conditions needed to thrive.
ACTION
Something small that you can do that might make a big difference
Ask
From personal experience and from observing clients, I know we all can have questions or needs that we sit with for far too long without actually asking. This might look like asking ‘why’, getting more clarity on a project, asking for help, asking what your role is, asking about promotions, asking to be paid quicker etc. I’m encouraging you to, 1) recognise your ‘ask’, and 2) ask!
PROCESSING
A question to think about and consider (you can discuss this with someone or write your thoughts down)
“Who has been my inside man (or woman)?”
Because life is demanding and many of us can feel we’re constantly busy and ‘doing’ things, we don’t always take the time to reflect well. This week’s question focuses on reflecting on who your inside people have been; who has opened doors for you, made recommendations, supported you or provided the links and connections needed. I’d highly recommended making a note of them!
I’d love for you to send me your own stories / thoughts about this. Drop me a line with your answer / thoughts on this question
SHOUT OUT
Who / what I think deserves recognition - my gratitude or to be celebrated.
Celebrating The Journey
Having sat in rooms, theatres and arenas’ recently, I wanted to shout out the positive energy we can get from coming together to celebrate people’s journeys with them. We can even do this ourselves, just recognise and celebrate our own journey and progress. We don’t do this enough!
