Big Talk | Surprise | Get Honest Or Die Lying

Hello there! Welcome to my weekly LEAPS.

You’re receiving this email because you subscribed to my weekly Wednesday feature or our mailing list. Every Wednesday, I share 5 things using our LEAPS approach:

Learn: something new or an idea
Energy: an energy (good or bad) word and it’s meaning
Action: something to do
Processing: a question to consider
Shout out: something or someone that I want to celebrate or acknowledge

LEARN
Something Worth Sharing

Big Talk

Inspired by the book I read last week, I’ve been focused on the amount of ‘small talk’ that exists in the world (my gift to you below provides details about the book I’m referring to). As the author of the book quickly explains, small-talk doesn’t refer to chatting about the weather, but questions how we increasingly talk in small ways. This can include everything from gossip to avoiding difficult conversations, poor self-talk (and lies we tell ourselves) to negativity and judgement (especially online).

To build on this, I recently met up with one of my oldest friends - we had tickets to see Chicago on stage. As we sat in anticipation of the show starting, we chatted. We communicate on Whatsapp regularly, but to talk in person we got to practice ‘big talk’ - the type where you can share how you feel, what’s actually going on and where empathy truly forms. We didn’t have long before the curtain rose, but we shared a really deep and important conversation - as well as both having belly-laughs together. Big talk is real talk; big talk is deep and empathetic, it is open and honest, it’s vulnerable and powerful and most importantly, it is vital to our being. If small talk refers to small mindedness, big talk is about a growth mindset of compassion.

ENERGY
An emotion or energy; a stand-out word / s

Surprise

From the Old French word sorprendre meaning "to overtake, seize, invade". Formed from SUR "over" + PRENDRE "to take".

Life is full of surprises - moments and situations that overtake us without warning. Of course, these can be positive, painful, challenging and joyful. The most important thing is adaptability and resilience - and a willingness to learn and grow.

ACTION
Something small that you can do that might make a big difference

Show Appreciation

To appreciate is to show / share a recognition and enjoyment of the good qualities of someone or something. The action for this week is to show your appreciation of someone or something.

PROCESSING
A question to think about and consider (you can discuss this with someone or write your thoughts down)

“What is the greatest gift you’ve been given?”

I’m hoping this is a very open question - to allow your mind to go wherever it needs. What do you regard as a ‘gift’? What gift has been the most significant to you?

I’d love for you to send me your own stories / thoughts about this. Drop me a line with your answer / thoughts on this question

SHOUT OUT
Who / what I think deserves recognition - my gratitude or to be celebrated.

Change of Environments

Over the past week we have been away in the French Alps. The weather has been really quite awful, however the change of environment has been wonderful. When we deliberately change our environment (e.g. swapping the office for a coffee shop), it can transform our thinking. I’m shouting out the change of environments we choose and experience.

I’ll be sharing a set of LEAPS each week with you and encourage you to do your own version:

  • L: what have you learned?

  • E: what’s your energy / feeling word

  • A: what’s one thing you need to do?

  • P: what are you thinking / processing?

  • S: who or what can you shout out?
