The Overlooked System

I was thinking about this recently, because it shows up everywhere, in life and in business. From experience and working with clients across the globe we see a tendency to focus on two things:

  1. What we’re trying to achieve: the systems, the structure, the results

  2. How we’re doing it: our actions, behaviours, execution

That’s where most of the time, attention and energy goes. When it doesn’t worl we try harder, do more, want more - force more.

But there’s another layer underneath all of that, and it’s the one that’s actually driving both the What and How. It’s the ‘human operating system’.

This system is made up of things we don’t always stop to look at properly,
who we are and where we’ve come from, what it all means to us, what matters most and why, how we lead ourself and make decisions, and the energy you’re bringing into it all. This is the part that gets missed.

It’s often easier to change a system we can see than it is to look at ourself. It is easier to push performance than it is to understand what’s really driving it.

We can’t just keep trying to quick-fix and adjust what’s visible, while the real issue sits underneath.

We see it in businesses all the time, and if we’re honest, in ourselves too.

When this foudnational layer is clear and in balance, things tend to flow. It instantly improved what you’re building and how you’re showing up.

When it’s not balanced, everything feels harder than it should, no matter how much effort you put in or how much you refine the system - you feel overwhelmed and stuck.

That’s usually the point worth paying attention to.

ENERGY
Focusing on an emotion or energy; a stand-out word / s

Drive

The word drive - as shown in the foundational human system above - is from Old English drīfan meaning to push forward, set in motion, compel, propel onward.

Drive isn’t about forcing more or pushing harder. It’s the underlying force that sets everything in motion. Without balanced ‘drive’ we end up in a state of pressure or drifting.


ACTION
Something small that you can do that might make a big difference

Pause

Always worth using this as an ‘action’ - remembering to pause before acting, to better manage our energy.


PROCESSING
A question to think about and consider (you can discuss this with someone or write your thoughts down
)

What is actually driving me right now, and is it helping or hurting the direction I’m trying to go?”

This is about looking underneath your actions and decisions to understand whether the force driving you is creating alignment and sustainable progress, or pressure, reaction and drift.

This question will be added to the Community Space in the Leapers Club for you to share your thoughts.


SHOUT OUT
Who / what I think deserves recognition, my gratitude or to be celebrated.

Travel

I’m shouting out ‘travel’, not just for the places it takes us, but for the perspective it gives us. Stepping outside our normal environment can quiet the noise, reset our thinking, and help us see ourselves, other people and what really matters a little more clearly.
