Step Back To See | Space | The 5am Club
Hello there! Welcome to my weekly LEAPS.
You’re receiving this email because you subscribed to my weekly Wednesday feature or our mailing list. Every Wednesday, I share 5 things using our LEAPS approach:
Learn: something new or an idea
Energy: an energy (good or bad) word and it’s meaning
Action: something to do
Processing: a question to consider
Shout out: something or someone that I want to celebrate or acknowledge
LEARN
Something Worth Sharing
Step Back To See
Last week we enjoyed a week's holiday, different to the travel we often do for work. It reminded me of something I regularly talk to business leaders about: the need to work on the business, not just in the business.
My learn was the reminder that the same is true for life in general.
Many of us become very good at being in our lives. We respond to emails, solve problems, support others, manage responsibilities, move from one week to the next and keep everything going.
What we often don't do is create enough time and space to work on our lives and ourselves.
Stepping back allows us to notice things we can't always see when we're in the middle of them. It creates room for perspective, reflection, ideas, gratitude and course correction.
We don't always need a week's holiday to do this either. Sometimes it's an hour in a coffee shop, a walk without a destination, a notebook and a quiet corner, or simply permission to pause.
Life isn't only something to be managed day by day. It's also something to occasionally step back and consciously shape.
ENERGY
Focusing on an emotion or energy; a stand-out word / s
Space
From the Latin spatium, meaning “room, distance or interval of time”. Space is what allows us to step back, see differently and create what couldn’t happen when everything is crowded together.
This beautifully links to the Learn of space not being emptiness, but where growth, clarity and direction happen.
ACTION
Something small that you can do that might make a big difference
Create Your Space
Create one small piece of space this week that is dedicated to working on your life rather than simply being in it. This could involve blocking 10 minutes to yourself, going to a new coffee shop on your own or getting up 30 minutes earlier. Whatever space you can find will be valuable.
PROCESSING
A question to think about and consider (you can discuss this with someone or write your thoughts down)
“What’s stopping me from creating the time and space to work on my life, rather than simply being in it?”
It’s one thing to recognise and talk about the importance of deliberately working on something, especially ourselves. It’s another thing entirely to create the time and space to actually do it, and to honestly acknowledge what gets in the way, whether that’s fear, guilt, busyness or simply struggling to prioritise ourselves.
This question will be added to the Community Space in the Leapers Club for you to share your thoughts.
SHOUT OUT
Who / what I think deserves recognition, my gratitude or to be celebrated.
Mitch Albom
Despite all the books I read, I rarely choose fiction and simply allow myself to enjoy a story without trying to capture the lessons or frameworks within it. Holiday reading is different though, and I always make room for one of Mitch Albom’s books.
This time it was The Little Liar. What I didn’t realise when I packed it was that the story was set in the exact place we were holidaying in Greece. Although fiction, it is deeply rooted in historical fact, making it both an incredible story and an unexpected education.
A shout out to Mitch Albom, and to those wonderful moments of fate that make an experience feel even more meaningful.
