Learn: something new or an idea
Energy: an energy (good or bad) word and it’s meaning
Action: something to do
Processing: a question to consider
Shout out: something or someone that I want to celebrate or acknowledge

The Decision Judgement

Many of our daughter’s friends and peer group are busily preparing for university. There are many IKEA trips taking place, essentials being bought, and nerves in between giddy excitement. One of the things I’ve noticed is a pattern of these young adults questioning their decisions - have they picked the right universities, the right course or career paths, the best accommodation, the right bedding etc? Following the limiting structure of school education, this next step in a young person’s life can seem daunting and overwhelming.

However, it strikes me that what they all need to know is that there isn’t a right or wrong decision - just a decision. For every BIG decision I’ve made (including divorce, remarrying, closing our family’s 106 year old business and so on), I realised that there is a judgement one can assign to the decision at the time of that decision. If you then wait for a significant amount of time to pass, the judgement of that same decision will change. The reason for this is that the judgement we hold is usually based on the outcome rather than the actual decision made. The longer you wait after a decision, the more the outcome starts to change and evolve. What once seemed a terrible outcome, when time is allowed to pass and things play out, will often shift to being a valuable outcome.

Simple example - the sky seems clear and the sun’s shining so I decide to go out without a coat; pretty good decision? You’d think so, until the rain comes. I’m now soaked through leading to a change of view about my absent coat decision! I then buy a new coat in the sale and it becomes my absolute favourite coat, ever! Good decision or bad decision to leave the original one at home?

ENERGY
An emotion or energy; a stand-out word / s

Significant

To me, the word ‘significant’ feels grand - so I researched its origins. It is from Latin significare meaning "make known, indicate". Earlier in the same sense was significative "indicated, signified". When something is significant, we increase our awareness of it - it is made known to us.

ACTION
Something small that you can do that might make a big difference

Think Back

Inspired by the book on which this week’s visual (I’m gifting to you below) is based, think back over a decision you had to make in the past. At the time, you perhaps viewed this as a challenging and painful decision. For yourself - and even better if you write it down too - acknowledge one important positive thing to come from that decision.

PROCESSING
A question to think about and consider (you can discuss this with someone or write your thoughts down)

“What big decision do I need to make in the next 12 months?”

Even when we don’t think about it consciously, there is often a decision we need to make - but haven’t recognised it yet. This week I’m urging you to think about this and bring those thoughts to your consciousness. Perhaps you need to decide to stop saying ‘yes’ to people, to start a training programme, to have better friends, move jobs…

I’d love for you to send me your own stories / thoughts about this. Drop me a line with your answer / thoughts on this question

SHOUT OUT
Who / what I think deserves recognition - my gratitude or to be celebrated.

Podcasts

When travelling I do love to find a good podcast to listen to. Often they are comedy-based, and other times I might opt for a learning-based theme. I remember hearing about ‘podcasts’ years ago, and thinking to myself ‘what a strange idea!’, but I am a firm fan now. Shout out to the humble concept and those that do them really well - whether that is to entertain or educate!
