Change Muscle | Adapt | Right Thing, Right Now

Hello there! Welcome to my weekly LEAPS.

You’re receiving this email because you subscribed to my weekly Wednesday feature or our mailing list. Every Wednesday, I share 5 things using our LEAPS approach:

Learn: something new or an idea
Energy: an energy (good or bad) word and it’s meaning
Action: something to do
Processing: a question to consider
Shout out: something or someone that I want to celebrate or acknowledge

LEARN
Something Worth Sharing

The Change Muscle

There’s a phrase that shows up in almost every organisation at some point:
“It’s just how we’ve always done it.”

Sometimes it’s said with pride - and often, it’s said without thinking. While it sounds harmless, it quietly reveals something deeper, a reliance on history over choice, and comfort over relevance.

In family businesses, this can be even more pronounced. Decisions, habits, and ways of working are often shaped over years, sometimes generations. What once worked well becomes protected, even when the context has changed.

But this isn’t just a family business pattern. It’s human. We are wired to prefer what is familiar. Routine feels comfortable, predictable and safe, even when it no longer serves us.

This is where the idea of a change muscle becomes useful. Like any muscle, change strengthens with use and weakens when left untouched.

When we rely on history instead of consciously choosing what still works, we weaken our ability to adapt. When change is rare and not encouraged, even small shifts feel uncomfortable, disruptive, or unnecessary.

This is why so many businesses struggle when introducing new systems, structures, or strategies. It’s rarely the system itself. It’s the people being asked to move in ways they haven’t practised.

A strong change muscle doesn’t come from big transformation moments. It comes from regularly questioning, adjusting, and trying new ways of doing things, even when the current way still “works”. Without that muscle, even the right change can feel wrong.

ENERGY
Focusing on an emotion or energy; a stand-out word / s

Adapt

To go with this weeks Learn, I was thinking of the word ‘adapt’. Its origin is from the Latin word adaptare meaning “to fit, to make suitable”.

Adaptation isn’t about reacting under pressure. It’s about shaping ourselves, and what we do, so it remains fit for what’s needed now. Given the world is constantlt changing around us, we must keep adapting.

ACTION
Something small that you can do that might make a big difference

Purposeful Change

Change one small thing on purpose this week. Not as a necessary thing to do, but because you can.

As an example, you might be:

  • do a mundane task in a different way (to your favourite song)

  • ask a question you wouldn’t normally ask

  • challenge a step in a process that “just exists”

  • invite a different perspective before deciding

  • say ‘no’ where you’d usually say ‘yes’

PROCESSING
A question to think about and consider (you can discuss this with someone or write your thoughts down
)

“What do I see when I look in the mirror - beyond the reflection?”

Before anything shifts around us, it helps to have awareness - especially self-awareness - first.

“What do I see when I look in the mirror” is not about appearance, it’s about recognising the patterns we carry, the assumptions we hold, and the ways we might be reinforcing “how things have always been”. This question is about self-awareness and honesty.

This question will be added to the Community Space in the Leapers Club for you to share your thoughts.

SHOUT OUT
Who / what I think deserves recognition, my gratitude or to be celebrated.

Courage To Act

I wanted to shout out the brave and responsible - who are willing to do something about the parts of themselves, and their lives, that aren’t serving them well. There’s nothing more draining than listening to people continually moaning about the same things over and over - and yet refuse to do anything about it.

LEAPS is a process used by our team and clients all the time - and even my own family on a daily basis.

I’ll be sharing a set of LEAPS each week with you and encourage you to do your own version:

  • L: what have you learned?

  • E: what’s your energy / feeling word

  • A: what’s one thing you need to do?

  • P: what are you thinking / processing?

  • S: who or what can you shout out?
