The Last 10% | Ready | Linchpin

Hello there! Welcome to my weekly LEAPS.

You’re receiving this email because you subscribed to my weekly Wednesday feature or our mailing list. Every Wednesday, I share 5 things using our LEAPS approach:

Learn: something new or an idea
Energy: an energy (good or bad) word and it’s meaning
Action: something to do
Processing: a question to consider
Shout out: something or someone that I want to celebrate or acknowledge

LEARN
Something Worth Sharing

The Last 10%

Starting something new is exciting. There are ideas to explore, things to create and the satisfaction of seeing something that didn’t exist begin to take shape.

Then comes the last 10%.

Checking. Correcting. Tidying. Restructuring. Proofing.

I’ve felt this working on my book. I’ve loved writing it, discovering the stories and watching it come together.

The final structuring? Not so much - but the last 10% matters.

Seth Godin talks about shipping the work. Getting what we create out of our hands and into the world where it can actually do something.

This isn’t about making things perfect. It’s about making them ready.

So, when you find yourself stuck at 90%:

  1. Get help.
Bring in expertise where you need it.

  2. Remember why.
Reconnect with the reason you started.

  3. See the finish.
Make what’s left specific and finite.

  4. Count progress differently.
Correcting, removing and resolving are progress too.

  5. Define ‘ready’.
Know when it’s good enough to go.

The energy that starts something isn’t always the energy needed to finish it. Sometimes we have to stop creating and start completing. Because your work doesn’t need to be perfect to make a difference - but it does need to make it into the world.

ENERGY
Focusing on an emotion or energy; a stand-out word / s

Ready

From Old English rǣde, meaning prepared, arranged, or equipped for what comes next.

Ready doesn’t mean perfect. It means enough has been done for the next thing to happen: to send it, share it, launch it, publish it, to begin.

Sometimes the most important question isn’t: “Is it perfect?” It’s: “Is it ready?”

ACTION
Something small that you can do that might make a big difference

Get It Over The Line

Think of something you’ve started but haven’t quite finished.

  • Write down only what still needs to happen for it to be ready.

Don’t get caught on what would make it better, or perfect - just ready.

Move something from nearly done to out in the world this week.

PROCESSING
A question to think about and consider (you can discuss this with someone or write your thoughts down
)

“What tends to be your go-to reason or excuse for not getting something over the line?”

We all have explanations that sound perfectly reasonable: not enough time, other priorities, needing more information, or wanting to make it a little better first. But sometimes the reason we give isn’t the real reason we stop.

Finishing means letting go. It means allowing something to leave our hands, be seen, used and perhaps judged.

Notice the explanation you tend to reach for when something is nearly done. Is it really the reason, or is it protecting you from something else?

This question will be added to the Community Space in the Leapers Club for you to share your thoughts.

SHOUT OUT
Who / what I think deserves recognition, my gratitude or to be celebrated.

Door Openers

Some people have a wonderful ability to open doors for others. They make an introduction, point you towards someone you should know, share something useful. Recommend you when you’re not in the room, or simply tell you which door might be worth knocking on.

They don’t walk the path for you. They just help you find a shorter route.

Often, one introduction or piece of direction can save months, sometimes years, of trying to find your own way. So this week, a shout out to the door openers - especially one called Ernie.
