We’ve been busy asking questions this month amidst the uncertainty of COVID19. The main one being: how are you, REALLY? In order to gain a statistical understanding of where we all are in GLAS terms right now, we have have recently launched an online assessment. We want to share with you the results to date, highlighting where everyone is at the moment during this challenging and unusual time. The following infographic is a summary of those that have, and are, continuing to participate so far.

WE’VE ASSESSED HOW PEOPLE FEEL ACROSS THE 7 MAIN ELEMENTS OF GLAS:

  1. Self & identity

  2. Relationships & those around them

  3. Activities & tasks

  4. External world and interaction with it

  5. Sense of purpose

  6. Leadership and direction

  7. Influence and drive

FEELING GOOD!

By far the most positive feeling we have at the moment is surrounding our relationships. Overall, people feel HARMONY and have time to spend with family in a way the perhaps usually wouldn’t. Of course, there are some who find this challenging.

BIGGEST CONCERN

The feelings that are - understandably - the most challenged, involve the external world and the impact we are trying to cope with. Many people feel they have no choice about this. We are being impacted by: COVID19, being forced to live in a restricted way, social media, and by the process of judging 'how we are coping' in comparison to other people, friends and family etc...

WHAT NOW?

The GLAS grid below shows that on average, participants feel a score of -0.9 (between -20 and 20), which puts them in the middle ‘WHAT NOW?’ zone. Without structure, we tend to drift into the ‘quick fix’ zone, however with a framework and focus, we are able to progress into the final zone: SUSTAINABLE SUCCESS.

UNDER. BALANCED. OVER.

With everything in life, we can feel balanced or imbalanced, but we can be either imbalanced with INSUFFICIENT (under), or imbalanced with TOO MUCH (over). The classic indicator of balance/imbalance is the ENERGY we have for what we do. When we feel balanced, we feel we have enough energy, however we can lack energy and feel STUCK (imbalanced-under), or we can overcompensate and feel MANIC (imbalanced-over). The IMPACT of COVID19 is affecting this balance/imbalance. We can feel CONNECTED to the world, our friends, ideas, the news etc…and feel balanced, or we can feel cut-off and SEPARATE (imbalanced-under) with insufficient connection, or OVERLOADED (imbalanced-over) with too much information.

The blue markers in the diagram to the left indicate that most people are currently feeling SEPARATE, but there is also a definite feeling of OVERLOAD. Essentially, we tend to be feeling imbalanced.

SO WHAT CAN WE DO?

Whilst it’s interesting to know this stuff, it isn’t really shocking or surprising given that we are in Lockdown. But what can we do about it?

Firstly, we need to acknowledge that we are feeling impacted, and that’s ok.

Next, we need to understand that IMPACT is felt at our foundational level of SELF. The stronger and more balanced we feel personally, the less that impact will have a negative effect. The model below shows the IMPACT PROCESS

The diagram shows:

  1. Impact comes in - let’s say this is a telephone call with an upset customer

  2. We receive it at a personal level

  3. We process the impact and our ‘beliefs’ check how we will interpret it - for example ‘I’m not good enough and its my fault they’re uphappy’

  4. This determines how we relate to it - in this case, we are defensive

  5. This determines our response - in this case, we might shout back or blame the other person. This is the beginning of a secondary impact

BUT, THE GOOD NEWS IS…

  • We can PAUSE between 1 & 2. Realise that most impacts aren’t personal but more to do with the source of the impact.

  • We can do all that’s possible to improve 3, to get enough sleep and exercise and be as good as we can.

  • We can be conscious of how we are responding to things.

  • We can pause before we respond and react. This allows us to take control of secondary impacts - it is a choice.

  • AND… know that the TRIGGER is never really the TRIGGER. There’s always more to things than we realise.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR TEAM

Our research has focused on individual feelings, alignment and balance but have you considered what happens when you put it all together in a team scenario? We are working with teams to understand where they are individually and as a collective - and what this means for the future.

If this sounds like something you’d be interested in for your team or even your clients, drop us a line and we’d love to talk you through the process.

FOR YOU TO TRY

We’ve created a download sheet for you with the 5 Principle Elements of GLAS. Click the button above and print off a copy to complete. We know these can be used for any transition or time of change so it’s perfect for right now.

  1. Think about PRE Covid19 and Lockdown. Complete column 1

  2. Think about DURING Covid19 and Lockdown. Complete column 2

  3. Think about your ideal POST Covid19 and Lockdown. Complete column 3
