Something Worth SharingEverything Is Part of Something I absolutely love system-thinking. As a former engineer, you quickly learn the importance of tracing an issue upstream in order to not just resolve the symptom, but fix the real problem. On our return from working in the US recently, we were greeted by a small leak into the kitchen. Having not been using the bathroom above, it was a little confusing as to why water has appeared - until our handy-man arrived. He soon found the issue, one caused by a failing joint within the aging shower system. The little trickle of visible water in our kitchen has resulted in needing a new shower unit and refurbished bathroom. Very often, people and organisations - and societies - try to find the ‘quick fix’ and mop up the small visible leak rather than strip back to the cause. A quick fix is short-term and usually temporary - putting off what will be a major flood at some point in the future. Quick fixes are looked at in isolation; this approach can be due to time or financial considerations and yet is both time and financially expensive in the long-run. Quick fixes can also be due to a need to feel better and / or avoid painful feelings. This can lead to often harmful symptomatic behaviours such as: social media use, addictions including eating, shopping, alcohol, gambling, and drugs, as well as over-doing things like exercise or working. These examples are covering up deeper imbalanced self-beliefs such as not feeling good enough or having a sense of worth. Everything is part of something, nothing exists in a vacuum or in isolation. If we fail to be aware of this, we can miss the impact we are creating - or the impact that has created a situation.
