Something Worth SharingThe Recovery Need
I am a very proud mentor to a wonderful young woman who inspired my ‘learn’ this week. We were talking about recovery and how important it is when ‘stuff’ happens to us. I joked that people often picture recovery as laying in bed with the covers on us - just waiting for our situation to improve. Recovery can certainly involve time - and patience - but in my experience it also involves many other things, many of which can be tough. When I had my hip replaced I went through recovery. My recovery developed and was organic, it was painful, it required commitment and many knock-backs. When I share the story of closing our 106 year old family business, I talk about the recovery process and how I put myself out into the local business community, spoke at universities, did hundreds of interviews, researched, developed intellectual property and at times, cried a whole heap. My recovery was messy and lengthy. As tough as recovery may be, it is vital, because the alternative is far worse: to not recover. Every day we need to recover; each day we go to bed to sleep. Our beloved (!) mobile devices need to recover when they get plugged in to recharge. We could perhaps do with learning not to see recovery as weak, but as an essential part of life.
