Something Worth SharingThe Intention Difference I have been steadily getting more and more annoyed and frustrated by something someone keeps doing to me. Now this thing they are doing is a small and relatively insignificant thing - but nevertheless, it is really grinding my gears. I was sharing this with a trusted confidant recently and that I couldn’t understand why it even mattered to me, let alone increasingly angering me. As so often happens, the sharing of feelings and thoughts with someone trusted led to my lightbulb moment. I explained that there was another person that was also doing the same thing, but for some reason I didn’t find that person annoying. The ‘a-ha!’ realisation was that I strongly felt that one person had no harmful intention towards me in what they were doing while the other - the upsetting one - had an unknown - and definitely untrusted intention. It made me think about how lots of people can all do the same thing, but we often feel differently about the action - all because of the intention difference. As leaders, this is something vitally important to understand. Making our intentions clear and sticking to them is key to trust and creating safe environments.
