The Waves of Confidence

I was talking to a fellow business owner recently about the strange thing that happens to us - not only when running a business, but in life. I was explaining how much I’m loving all the work we’re doing at the moment - and that we only work with great people who we’re aligned with. In many ways, things couldn’t be better; we’re getting incredible feedback and people are constantly approaching us to help them. Perfect! However, as I was telling him this he jumped in and said, “I can feel a BUT coming”. He was right - the BUT was about to appear.

I don’t know if this sounds familiar to you, but I have noticed that time and time again I feel like I’m buzzing with confidence - all the boxes are ticked, everyone’s happy, you’re building momentum and literally riding on the crest of the wave. Then the BUT appears; someone says something, emails something, questions something…and you fall hard. The wave of confidence, that was just a moment ago carrying you, is now on top of you - throwing you around so you don’t know which way is up.

You manage to pick yourself up again and off you go, building back your confidence. This continues to the point that you’re back to the peak of “I’ve got this”….then the BUT returns. I’ve also noticed that we build confidence as we do things - we achieve and can see the results of our actions. However, when we fall from the crest of the wave, it’s personal. We feel as if someone is questioning us as a person. The length of time we are riding high can be cut short by a very small comment! So often the trigger to fall back isn’t meant personally, but is taken personally due to our inner-beliefs about ourselves (e.g. am I good enough and do I belong?). The skill is in regulating the wave and building some resilience.

My learn comes from this repeating cycle plus the need to remember:

• The cycle is natural

• It happens to everyone (in varying degrees)

• Even when you fall from the crest of the wave, you’re making progress

ENERGY
Focusing on an emotion or energy; a stand-out word / s

Structure

This is a word that we use a lot within the GLAS team. The origins of the word are from Latin - the word STRUCTURA which means "a fitting together, adjustment; a building, mode of building;" figuratively, "arrangement, order". The word goes back further to STRUERE which meant "to pile, place together, heap up; build, assemble, arrange, make by joining together".

We often need to structure things - write them, visualise them, create a plan etc - so that we can build. Structure is very much one of the key approaches to building confidence and clarity.

ACTION
Something small that you can do that might make a big difference

Simplify

This is a very general action for you - to simplify something. This could be sorting out your wardrobe or drawers, your files on your computer, your social media activity or even your diary and commitments. Just see what one thing you would simplify.

PROCESSING
A question to think about and consider (you can discuss this with someone or write your thoughts down)

“What do you need to work on?”

A colleague said something the other day that triggered this question. He said that he knew he needed to work on something within himself to better delegate. It made me think about the things I need to work on within me. What do you need to work on?

Being World Class

During a workshop last week, a few people throughout the two days used the term “world class” as an aspiration for various things. It reminded me of when my dad used to say, “whatever you do in life - be that a window cleaner or business owner - be the best at it. Be ‘world class’”. I’m shouting out people that go above and beyond in whatever it is they do - to be ‘world class’.
