Help To Buy

I’ve noticed the subject of ‘selling’ has popped up several times over recent weeks - what to sell, how to sell, how much to sell and so on. For some reason, I’ve always felt uncomfortable about the concept of ‘selling’. It seems to highlight that one party has something and is almost forcing it on another. Perhaps it says more about my experience of pushy sales people!

A few years ago, while developing a product for the market, I had the realisation that if we don’t want to ‘sell at’ people, then perhaps I needed to flip things around to look at it from a customers perspective. Rather than ‘selling to’ them - almost pushing onto - I chose to help them to ‘buy from’ us. Buying felt more empowering and positive, a way of pulling people in to you rather than pushing onto them.

This is a subtle but hugely important shift. When you help a client to buy you have to be more empathetic and understanding, you have to listen and learn and most importantly let go of your assumptions.

Buying from rather than selling to is a change of perspective and focus - you have to move from being opposite a client to next to them. It also demands that to help do this, we need to:

• know who your ideal client is

• be completely clear about what they want to buy and why

• simplify what they buy, stop overwhelming or confusing

• communicate well about what they are buying and how

• create a simple, clear and effective buying experience (beginning to end)

• know that what and how people want to buy will change and evolve

ENERGY

Worth

Someone admitted to me recently that they didn’t know their worth. I think that if we’re honest, this is a common feeling for many of us - even if only fleetingly. But what is worth?

The word originates from Old English WEORP meaning: "significant, valuable, of value; valued, appreciated, highly thought-of, deserving, meriting; honourable, noble, of high rank; suitable for, proper, fit, capable". In many ways, the worth of something is a perceived value.

When we think of our worth - to others, to society, to our businesses etc - we are considering our contribution and place and if they are of value and importance. Unfortunately, we often gauge self-worth through others and society rather than internally and how we perceive the value we place on ourself. How we appreciate our value ourselves through our struggles, achievements, resilience, effort and growth matters more than we realise.

ACTION
Something small that you can do that might make a big difference

Value Added List

Continuing on the theme of self-worth and value, keep a note of things that highlight your value and worth over the next few days. In other words, write down what you appreciate about yourself - whether that is: patience, the love you have for your family, the interest you have in books, cooking dinner etc.

Imagine if you didn’t do any of these things - what would happen? These are part of your worth and the value you add to others.

PROCESSING
A question to think about and consider (you can discuss this with someone or write your thoughts down)

“What are you contributing to the world?”

The questions that I pose to you and for you to process are from a list that I pre-write at the beginning of a year. It’s pure coincidence that this week’s question sits in the same space as the other sections of this LEAPS. It was based on the knowledge that a common purpose for all humans is the need to give and contribute - to serve. What we serve and contribute is personal to our strengths and abilities as well as our situation.

Our contributions don’t need to be material, in fact how we contribute is more about how we show up - with joy or inquisitiveness, with passion or effort. What are your contributions and are you happy with how you answer the question?

SHOUT OUT
Who / what I think deserves recognition, my gratitude or to be celebrated.

Timing

Our middle son is continuing his ‘ski instructor’ adventure in the Canadian resort of Big White. He’s loving his experience and the opportunity. However, last week he sent the family ‘Whatsapp’ group a picture of broken skis with an accompanying message of how he crashed and broke them. As parents, we tend to be on constant alert for such messages from our children - especially as they become independent. Of course we called him immediately to ascertain the actual story and damage - not of the skis but to him. He thought he’d possibly broken his shoulder and damaged his knees, but as he explained - it was better than hitting his friend who had fallen ahead of him and who he swerved to avoid. It turned out that while the skis were terminal, his shoulder has healed well and his knees are improving.

The reason for my shout out is because Max understood timing. He understood the importance of only mentioning the incident to my parents once he knew everything was ok so not to worry them. Timing is a hugely important part of life!
