LEARN Something Worth SharingMake Space We were meeting up with friends last Saturday evening, and decided to take the train. Being the weekend of Black Friday, everything was pretty busy - especially with the festive German Market also being in full swing now. As our train approached the main city centre station, many of the passengers joined us in preparing to disembark. Just as the carriages slowly came to a standstill we could see an unusually vast number of people stood on the platform waiting to get on our train. The doors opened and to my dismay, passengers started pushing to get on the train - despite there being a young family with pushchair trying desperately to make their way off the train. As I’m sure you can imagine, things were a little tense and heated between those onboarding and those trying to leave the train. As we eventually managed to exit the station, it struck me that it’s basic maths - until we created a space, people wouldn’t actually be able to fill it, despite their “best” efforts. I’ve experienced similar things with elevators, there is a finite amount of space and so we can only fill what is available. Our time and space is the same as a carriage on a train or elevator in a hotel, a glass cup - or any container for that matter. Once it’s full, it’s full. To add more of something, we need to prioritise so we can decide what to remove to create the necessary space. If you spend more time working, you will need to sacrifice something - unfortunately this is often family time or more often, the time needed to recover and rest. If there is something we want or need to add to our life, we first need to create the appropriate space.
