Something Worth SharingHidden Loss When we hear the word “loss”, it’s easy for our minds to be taken to bereavement and the ‘loss’ we suffer with the passing of loved ones. This is a very visible and obvious form of loss, and usually terribly sad. The other obvious loss I think of is that of not being the first past the finishing line or the victor in a sporting sense. Again, this is an obvious loss we’re all familiar with. With each, we can console the person or team that have suffered the loss. Over the past couple of weeks I’ve been reminded, through clients and several conversations, about the hidden losses we all have to endure. My first example was my husband testing positive for COVID-19 last week. The loss of freedom is something that we have all encountered over the past couple of years. We have been unable to just jump on a plane, hug our relatives or even leave the house in some instances. The next example is when we suffer the loss of an experience or dream - when something doesn’t go to plan and provide us with what we hoped for. All three of my pregnancies failed to go to plan and I spent months in a wheelchair in each case - forcing me to experience the loss of the ideal journey to motherhood and the loss of independence. There are numerous examples of this - the loss of jobs, relationships, retirement and so on. The reason I wanted to highlight this is because when we can see the loss we can realise that we’ve often not dealt with it - with loss comes a form of grief even just a fleeting one. I would also add that when we realise that these experiences come with a form of loss, we can choose to see what we gained along the way, which fills that loss with learning and resilience. Loss is a normal part of being human - and a necessary one to realise what we have.
