Something Worth SharingUnconscious Compensation My hip replacement - from December 2020 - has been an amazing success. The benefits have far exceeded expectations, especially given that I’d also had to have my torn gluteus medius repaired. However, just recently I’d noticed a pain in my thigh and so had to go back to my consultant. He explained that the issue is being caused by compensation. The human body - and nature for that matter - is simply amazing. When we have an issue with something, we are able to compensate. While this allows us to maintain functionality, it is often at the expense of something and certainly isn’t a long term resolution. Having suffered with issues in my hip for about 20 years, I’d developed a limp. As a consequence to this, I had muscle wastage and more recently, the hip flexor suffered degeneration and increasing weakness - known as atrophy. To compensate for this, my body began to use other muscles in my thigh and abdomen to do the work of the flexor. This type of compensation isn’t a conscious shift - and is what happens with all living systems. There are many other types of living systems such as businesses, education, relationships, sport and so on - where compensation occurs. When something (or someone) stops working in a system, in order for things to continue there is an unconscious compensation. This usually happens gradually, building over time, and can include atrophy somewhere else in the system. Compensation means "to weigh one thing (against another)" formed from COM "with, together" + PENSARE "to hang, cause to hang; weigh; pay". The issue is, compensation is rarely balanced in a positive state - we exchange the immediate need to survive for pain or suffering elsewhere. This is true in all other systems - you can exchange avoiding a difficult conversation for frustration, exchange allowing a poor culture to develop for your best employees leaving.
