Something Worth SharingThe Value of New Beginnings I’ve noticed a significant number of ‘firsts’ and ‘new beginnings’ happening around me recently. These have included our youngest child, Emmy, beginning life in the 6th form at school and starting her A-Levels, our oldest boy starting a new job, and the first of his school friends getting married. New beginnings can be exciting while also being a little daunting. They signify a new time period—a fresh start. When I think of the many new beginnings I’ve had in my life, some were ones that I chose (going to University for example) whilst others were forced upon me (the closure of our family business). Some new beginnings were entered into in a positive way (birth of our first child), and others were sad or upsetting (life without my grandpa). I’ve come to realise that however they appear to us, and whether starting again or doing something for the very first time, they all present an opportunity and feeling of hopefulness. The other learning is that life is littered with new beginnings - in fact, each day is exactly that; when we wake it is a chance to have a new beginning. Buddhists believe that life is a progression of discrete moments - of constant reincarnation and new beginnings - that we move from a previous self to a present self. In other words, with every breath we take, we are a new person experiencing a new beginning. They believe that we are not bound by our previous mistakes. To summarise the learning this week: New beginnings are constantly happening However new beginnings arrive, they carry hope and opportunity We can choose to consider each day, hour or breath as a new beginning New beginnings allow us to not be bound by mistakes and failures New beginnings mean we get to choose who we want to be
