The Magic Sauce

I’ve been working with an incredible group of GLAS licence holders for sometime now, and I often tell them that I learn as much through them as I teach. My most recent ‘learn’ has been around the stages of development I’ve observed them go through. These stages resonated with my husband and his journey as a part-time rugby referree, and also for me as I think about taking over as CEO of our family business a fair few years ago.

The first thing we all need when developing skills is the ‘education’ - the instructions and guidance, the knowledge of what we have to do. Our licence holders all begin by learning what the framework and method is - and why. They gain insights into how we approach things ‘in theory’. There are lots of people that spend time learning from courses, books etc, but education on its own has little impact.

The next thing is to develop and gain experience - putting the education to use in a practical way. The implementation is key, knowing that things are never as simple as a set of instructions. A recipe printed in a book is certainly not going to bring the experience to life, we have to have a go ourselves to discover the reality. Experience depends on persistence, planning and practice. Again, there are a great many people who boast about X years of experience - experience on its own simply means doing something for a long time, it doesn’t say how well!

The third and most important stage is the magic sauce. This is the ability to use intuition and leverage the education and experience. It is where we go to a whole new level and master alignment, agility, resilience and courage. It is the stage that shifts gear and often can’t be taught - it’s about reading body language, thinking on your feet, empathy, perspective…the list is vast.

ENERGY
Focusing on an emotion or positive energy; a stand-out word / s

Exhilarate

While thinking about ‘positive energy’, my mind drifted to skating (ice dance) on the first clean ice of the day - usually just before 6am. There would be a mist floating on the ice surface and as you skated out - with just the sound of the blade cutting into virgin ice - the word that came to mind is ‘exhilarating’.

It originates from Latin EXHILARATUS meaning "cheerful, merry”. It is formed by EX "out, out of; thoroughly"+ HILARARE "make cheerful". What makes you cheerful and joyous?

ACTION
Something small that you can do that might make a big difference

As a ‘stop and look up’ question

Let me explain…a “stop and look up” question is one that makes someone look up into their head to really search for their thoughts. They are the type of questions that are often accompanied with ‘oh, what a great question!’. Making our brains work helps keep us creative and agile, and so this action is designed to help with that - and to open up conversations.

See if you can ask someone - at home or work - a great question. It will be something that they probably haven’t thought about before. Here are a few examples:

• What is your earliest memory of money?

• Who inspired the type of relationships you want / wanted to have?

• What have been the most important pivot points of your life?

See if you can make someone stop and look up.

PROCESSING
A question to think about and consider (you can discuss this with someone or write your thoughts down)

“How do you respond to receiving a ‘no’?”

We are taught that ‘no’ is a negative response and yet when I think about my life - “no” has often led to something better. A ‘no’ very often provides clarity and certainty, which we can at least move on from. How do you receive a ‘no’? How does it make you feel? When has a ‘no’ allowed you to move forwards?

SHOUT OUT
Who / what I think deserves recognition, my gratitude or to be celebrated.

Mother Nature

It was Mothering Sunday at the weekend-just-gone, a time to celebrate and acknowledge mothers. I chose to create a special visual to THE Mother of all mothers - Mother Nature.

Whenever I get overwhelmed, she’s there for me. I have increasingly valued taking a walk outside and absorbing the sound of birds, bracing wind and changing trees. More than this, however, I have found that when I need an answer to something, I can look to nature for inspiration and ideas. The GLAS Method is very much connected to nature - to balance and alignment. Therefore, this week she gets my shout out and I share below the visual that I created for you to download.
