The Expectation Key

We are often asked what is key to great relationships. This is both a huge and vital question. It’s common for one of the top 10 things to be communication. Lists will also include trust, respect and commitment. But, after years of working with family businesses, the most common thing that shows up in great relationships (and is missing in poor ones) is around expectations.

It also isn’t enough to simply say that we need to have ‘expectations’ or that they need to be met. This ‘key’ is essential and also comes with 5 specific needs:

1. Clarity

   We need to know what we each expect of the other and of ourselves

2. Share
   It is vital to share this information openly

3. Agree

   Don’t assume - make sure that there is agreement between everyone

4. Accountable

   Now we have to hold each other to account on this basis

5. Adjust
   It is only natural to need to review and adjust as time goes on and needs change

It is also worth mentioning that this all especially applies to the most important relationship we have - the one with ourself. The toughest expectations that ever get set are the ones we place on ourselves.

ENERGY
Focusing on an emotion or energy; a stand-out word / s

Perspective

The word Perspective is from Latin perspicere "inspect, look through, look closely at". It is formed by PER "through, forward" + SPECERER "look at" .

To understand, is to be able to move around something or someone, to change how we see - physically and metaphorically. This is perspective. To keep hold of it, we need to constantly question how we see things!

PROCESSING
A question to think about and consider (you can discuss this with someone or write your thoughts down)

“Who is the person that you’d turn to for wisdom and advice that is only in your best interest? Why would you choose them?”

This week’s question is to get you to consider who you feel is your go-to person. This is the person you most respect and admire in life. If there isn’t anyone you can think of, how do you ensure you seek help and advice to make decisions you’re happy with?

Who / what I think deserves recognition, my gratitude or to be celebrated.

Those That Go Beyond

I want to shout out to those that have passion, dedication and expertise in a given area or field. This could be an amateur plane spotter or a brain surgeon. I’ve experienced those that ‘just do the minimum’ and those that love what they do and go way beyond - are real enthusiasts. The gaps between these two is huge. It’s hard to go beyond when you don’t have the passion and energy for your subject!
