Something Worth SharingEnergy-Led I was standing in the changing room at our swimming pool last week and noticed (it was difficult not to) shouting coming from the pool area. It was a female voice that I didn’t recognise - screaming mainly commands, but also (I think) some encouragement. I’m used to it being quiet at this particular day and time at our pool - being the end of the aqua-aerobics session for more senior club members. The lady I recall leading these classes, while lovely to chat to, certainly didn’t have a great deal of energy or enthusiasm. She would stand pool-side in the same spot and demonstrate actions, to the 9 or so ladies in the pool, with virtually no verbal instruction - lifting a leg here, turning round, holding a float over her head etc. I was intrigued (and scared, if I’m honest) to go from the changing rooms to the pool area. Wow! If I thought the new instructor was loud from the changing facilities, when sitting pool-side, it was a whole new level! But what struck me was the smile on her face, the smiles on the ladies in the pool and the amount of splashing, laughing and energy exuding from them all. They were ‘high-fiving’, cheering, swimming, throwing arms in the air, racing against each other - it was joyous! As the final few moments of their class counted down, you could feel the energy. They were the same ladies I’ve observed in the past, but with a completely new lease of life. The learn here is that what we do isn’t really the magic, it’s how and why we do them. The new instructor was running a class, just as her predecessor had - tick! But this time with a huge about of passion, energy and drive - which transferred to the whole class as well as those that saw it. Whether you’re leading yourself, your kids, your team or board - do it with energy, that way you’ll get more from it and so will everyone else around you!
