Something Worth SharingThree States of Balance A core and underpinning ethos of the GLAS Method is balance. For many of us, we are taught that balance has two states: something is either balanced or imbalanced - simple. As a former ice dancer, I had to learn quickly about balance, after all you’re skating at high speed on 3-4 mm (less than 3⁄16 in) thick tempered carbon steel. More than that, a blade has a concaved surface (an ‘n’ shaped bottom) meaning that you’re actually skating on two finely ground edges - allowing you to carve into the ice, on either an inside or outside edge. The blade literally cuts into the ice. But as with life, we can tip too far in one direction and become imbalanced. It’s then natural to try and regulate - to correct - however this often results in over-correcting and tipping too far in the opposite direction. The more we over-correct the more wobbly we become trying to find the balanced and stable centre. People live life in this same way, as do teams and businesses. We tip one way and then over-correct to end up overcompensating. This demonstrates that balance has three states: 1) imbalanced under, 2) balanced and 3) imbalanced over. As an example: we want to feel confident at a personal level (balanced state), however we can often feel doubtful and lacking in confidence (imbalanced under). Our research shows that many of us then overcompensate for doubt by trying to be over-confident which shows up as arrogance, imposed behaviour and even bullying. Where are you spending your energy?
