Something Worth SharingMonth of Emotions Have you ever thought about the fact that December is the most emotional month of the year? Our emotions are strongly connected to memories and how we relate to things. This time of year is quite unique in that the festive music that is played is repeated - it’s rare to have many new Christmas record releases. The rest of the year we hear new music, but in December we listen to music we probably grew up with - and therefore associated memories get triggered. Many of us put up festive decorations - baubles, lights and the star for the top of the tree. Again, many of these have been part of our lives for a number of years along with the feelings we attach to them. The same is true of the films that do the rounds at this time of year. This is what ‘tradition’ is. Because this month is such a key month for many of us, we will recall specifics about gifts we received, meeting Santa, our favourite Christmas with loved ones perhaps no longer with us and much more. Why is it the most emotional month? Because these memories - and our senses - are linked to our emotions. Our lives are strongly influenced by how we see things and how we feel about things. December provokes emotions - happy, bad, sad, excitement, anxiousness, joy, gratitude - to name just a few. It is also a point in which the year draws to a close and provides us with the chance to reflect, and also begin to plan. Don’t be hard on yourself when emotions get stirred, but be self-kind. Be patient and understanding with others as we won’t necessarily know what’s going on for them or how they are feeling - or why. Take the time and space to ‘be’ rather than ‘do’.
