Something Worth Sharing

School of 50

Today is my 50th birthday. It brought with it the opportunity to reflect over a fair few years and ask “what have been my biggest lessons?”. Funnily enough, the things that have come to mind are nothing to do with classrooms or school.

My greatest teachers have included: failure, heartbreak, struggle, frustration and challenge. My favourite lessons have been based around: purpose, relationships, self, results and possibility.

As I think back, I have definitely discovered some key learnings that have become friendly companions:

• The value of questions.

• How we choose to see and feel determines our chances of fulfilment - how important our perspective and emotions are.

• Where you are is where you’re meant to be.

• If you don’t look after yourself, you can’t look after anything or anyone else. Kindness is a super power.

• The trigger is never the trigger - look beneath, behind and around to better understand.

There is another lesson that I am often reminded of:

“our experience of yesterday creates the dreams of tomorrow, and opportunities of today”.

I have lost a number of childhood friends over the past few years and it means that my biggest lesson is to be grateful for every one of those experiences, to keep dreaming and going after all opportunities - deliberately and with kindness. Turning 50 is a privilege - as is every person that I’ve been connected to (good and bad) during that time.

Appreciate

The word 'APPRECIATE’ is from a Late Latin word APPRETIARE meaning "to set a price to", formed from AD ‘to’ + PRETIUM ‘price’. It was understood to mean ‘being conscious of the rise in value’ - which I love.

The first step to appreciate is to be aware and conscious, the second step is to understand the value of someone or something. Of course, this is far more than a price, it is the meaning and significance.

“What is unresolved?”

We all have things that can remain unresolved in our lives - physically and emotionally. These things can often - and unconsciously - drain energy and head space; think of them as open loops.

What is doing this for you? It might be a relationship, a conversation, a chore… and what could you do to close the open loop?

Who / what I think deserves recognition, my gratitude or to be celebrated.

My 18250 Days

This is how many days I’ve been in the world. Some of the days have been incredible - so utterly breathtaking and brilliant that they were almost unbelievable. Other days were dark - they dragged and hurt, causing the most awful pain imaginable. Most of the days have sat somewhere in between these two extremes - but all have been my days and are precious.

I’ve travelled, laughed, worked, cried, fallen, risen, shared, loved and hurt - but most importantly served through a purpose of inspiration. Thank you to each and every day for whatever it’s brought me and allowed me to become.
