Perspective Isn’t One Thing

For many years now, we have been helping people to realise that there are two factors that influence how we approach and succeed in life: 1) how we feel about things - our emotions and understanding them and 2) how we see things - our perspective. The greater the confidence and clarity we have, the better for both of these things.

The ability to have clarity reassures us, provides focus (while reducing distraction) and helps us map out strategies to progress. In business, clarity is known to help improve connection and engagement - removing uncertainty and bringing people together towards a shared cause. How we see things is about more than just clarity, it’s also about perspective. Very often we come across people who believe perspective is black or white - here or there. Perspective, is not fixed and certainly not one thing. Perspective is based on the ability to move our mind - the thing that ultimately determines how we see; our eyes are just a way of receiving signals, the mind translates this into understanding what we see.

Perspective can be viewed as a muscle, the more you use it and exercise it - stretch it even - the more powerful it becomes. By pushing ourselves to use multi-dimensional perspectives, we can improve our ability to be compassionate, problem-solve, spot opportunities and progress. Unfortunately, most of us are so guilty of being busy and stuck in our ‘day-to-day’ to-do lists that we only have the perspective of looking down. Forcing ourselves to shift into different perspectives is vital for business, relationships and our sense of fulfilment. So in addition to looking down, also consider:

• looking up

• looking out

• looking close

• looking back

• looking forwards

• looking within

ENERGY
Focusing on an emotion or positive energy; a stand-out word / s

Motivation

The definition of ‘motivate’ is: "to stimulate toward action, act as the inciting cause of" and comes from MOTIVE + ATE.

Originally, the word MOTIVE came from the Latin word MOVERE "to move". To MOTIVATE is to cause something or someone to move. The cause of needing or wanting to move can be varied - we can either move away from, or towards. We often move away from pain and towards pleasure. Motivation isn’t always obvious, to ourselves or others. The better we know ourselves and have self-awareness, the more informed we become about our motives and motivation.

ACTION
Something small that you can do that might make a big difference

Changing How You See

Think about a challenge or situation you have been through where someone else was involved, for example an argument or disagreement. Write it down.

Now write how you saw it from your perspective. Now imagine you are the other person - forget how you felt - and write down their perspective. How do you think they felt. Do you think this would have changed your approach to the disagreement?

PROCESSING
A question to think about and consider (you can discuss this with someone or write your thoughts down)

“What are you grateful for?”

Always a powerful and important question; what are you grateful for? We ask this of our clients at the end of every session as they share their LEAPS. The ‘S’ is for ‘shout out’ - who or what do we need to acknowledge and be grateful for?

A Friendly Face

I had a rough few days recently - which included a trip to the emergency vets as our little pup Winnie had a close encounter with a toad (if you weren’t aware, they are poisonous to dogs and can be fatal). I’m happy to report she’s on the road to recovery, however at the time we were extremely worried - fearing the worst. We’ve never used the out of hours emergency vet, but they were fantastic. The most important thing was when we showed up, they were the friendly face we needed for reassurance.

There was another issue I had to face, this one being on a professional basis. It had completely derailed me and caused all sorts of stress. That is, until once again a friendly face appeared. This time it was via email rather than a physical presence, but it had the same impact of reassurance and rebalance. We all need to access ‘the friendly face’ at times - the ‘go-to’ person who will help us regulate emotions, gain perspective and enable us to keep going. Equally, we need to be ready to offer that friendly face to others as and when required.
