Something Worth SharingUnderstand the Value How do you value your time? How do you value your business? How do you value your partner or relationships? How do you value your day? My husband recently asked a general question: “how do you value success in a business?”. We talked about the way in which people assess value by effort and results. The more effort and work applied, the more value there must be - or at least this is what many of us are taught and experience. In a business, value is often seen as a balance sheet, profit figure, head count or turnover. We value a business primarily on numbers; various valuation methods exist, such as V (valuation) = P (profit) x M (multiple), but is this really understanding the true value? How do you value anything? The word originates in the Latin word valere: "to be strong, be well; be of value, be worth". A good day to me - one of value - is one that has honoured my purpose of INSPIRE. If I have inspired anyone, or indeed been inspired by others, then my day had value. It doesn’t depend on ticking things off a list, keeping score, hitting goals or checking a bank balance. Value for me is about 1) balance and 2) alignment. Balance supports inner-confidence and alignment supports clarity - these two things, when combined, can provide significant value and an ability to thrive. A business built on a culture that understands this for everyone within it, is far more likely to build ‘societal numerical value’.
