Something Worth SharingWhen Are You Done? This seems to be a question that keeps cropping up within our house at the moment. Friends, family and neighbours are all keen to know when our building project is due to ‘be done’. It’s caused me to really think about the point at which we consider anything ‘done’. Most things in life aren’t as simple as ticking a box and then forgetting about it. For our building project, there will be a point at which the builders and kitchen fitters can’t do any more, but the project will then involve the garden, the driveway, decorating…and the list goes on. How do we define the point at which we are ‘done’? What evidence is required to know that nothing more is needed? I often talk to one of our GLAS licence holders about weight loss and the issue of ‘being done’; weight loss focus being a short-term view with the more important issue being to develop a healthy and sustainable lifestyle. As an example, the ongoing management of weight is never done. A number of years ago I sold a business, and at the point of signing the legal documents I thought that would be it all ‘done’ - it wasn’t. Even closing our family business after 106 years taught me that the point at which many things are truly ‘done’ - over and complete - are rare in life. The business may have gone, but the legacy continues to this day, closing it was just a stage I passed through. Impact continues, and can be felt, long after anything is ‘done’. Perhaps the more appropriate question is: “what phase or stage are you in?”
