Someone Has To

I was chatting to my husband yesterday about the number of times someone in a group or situation is required to step up do something - and strangely it often seems to be me. In our family business, someone needed to fill in when people were ill and I’d be the one to do that. Years later someone needed to step up and run the business and carry out a management buy out - and that person was me. On our road, someone needed to organise events (most recently, our Jubilee street party and fundraising), and that person was me again. During lockdown, someone in our group needed to create a regular online community and schedule regular calls - so I did it.

What makes this happen? What makes certain people be the person that ticks the ‘someone has to’ box. I’ve been pondering this for a while and there are a few things that come to mind that help me be the person that ‘has to’:

• My strength of belief in the project or cause (and my knowing my purpose)

• An overarching belief in possibility and finding a way

• My weird (!) set of experiences and skills that I can offer

• History of failing means I don’t mind challenges and risk

• Why not me?

When - or are you ever - the ‘someone has to’ person? If not, who around you is? I’d love you to share your thoughts with me and what you think makes people step up. I’m married to someone that is also a Someone Has To person - and I couldn’t be prouder of him.

ENERGY
Focusing on an emotion or positive energy; a stand-out word / s

Scintillate

I’m not sure this is a word we tend to use very much but it cropped up when looking at words associated with ‘sparkling’.

What caught my attention was its true meaning - because I can really only think of it being used sarcastically. If someone is boring, you might say "Well, that was scintillating," while rolling your eyes.

The word actually originates from the Latin word SCINTILLARE "to sparkle, glitter, gleam, flash".

ACTION
Something small that you can do that might make a big difference

Give it away

I’m encouraging you to give something away this week. This could be anything; your time, an item you’re clearing out from your wardrobe, a book, a thought or idea that you’re fixed on. Think about the act of giving something away - freely and willingly.

PROCESSING
A question to think about and consider (you can discuss this with someone or write your thoughts down)

“What do you feel ‘bittersweet’ about?”

This is connected to my recommended book Bittersweet (below). As humans, we experience a constantly changing set of complex emotions; we can feel both sad and happy at the same time - that is what bittersweet is, dual feelings.

My best example is our middle son living in Canada - it is sweet because he is following his dreams, but also bitter because we miss him. What makes you feel bittersweet?

SHOUT OUT
Who / what I think deserves recognition, my gratitude or to be celebrated.

Top Gun - Maverick

I’ve heard nothing but rave reviews of the long awaited sequel to the 1986 Tom Cruise film. However, in my humble experience, many second / follow on films fail to live up to the expectations created by a) the first film, b) the anticipated wait, and c) the media-hype. When my husband suggested seeing it, I happily went along for the nostalgia. Let me tell you…this is possibly one of the best films I’ve seen for a good number of years. It didn’t disappoint. It has to have my ‘shout out’ - and highly recommended viewing if you haven’t seen it yet!
