Something Worth SharingBig Talk Inspired by the book I read last week, I’ve been focused on the amount of ‘small talk’ that exists in the world (my gift to you below provides details about the book I’m referring to). As the author of the book quickly explains, small-talk doesn’t refer to chatting about the weather, but questions how we increasingly talk in small ways. This can include everything from gossip to avoiding difficult conversations, poor self-talk (and lies we tell ourselves) to negativity and judgement (especially online). To build on this, I recently met up with one of my oldest friends - we had tickets to see Chicago on stage. As we sat in anticipation of the show starting, we chatted. We communicate on Whatsapp regularly, but to talk in person we got to practice ‘big talk’ - the type where you can share how you feel, what’s actually going on and where empathy truly forms. We didn’t have long before the curtain rose, but we shared a really deep and important conversation - as well as both having belly-laughs together. Big talk is real talk; big talk is deep and empathetic, it is open and honest, it’s vulnerable and powerful and most importantly, it is vital to our being. If small talk refers to small mindedness, big talk is about a growth mindset of compassion.
