Something Worth SharingThe Deliberate Storyteller For years I’ve heard people say things along the lines of: ‘everyone has a book within them’. As someone who is fascinated by people’s stories, I decided to investigate this a little more when I stumbled over Toni Morrison’s quote:
"If there's a book you want to read, but it hasn't been written yet, then you must write it."
Storytelling is one of the oldest forms of communication - long before we looked at spreadsheets and were able to ‘follow and like’ posts. Stories build connections between people and ideas, whether spoken, written or even drawn on cave walls. They give shape to raw data, build empathy and human connection - bringing things to life and making them accessible. Over the festive period, my husband and I finally watched the original Avatar movie (I know, very late to the party!). We did this so we could then go to the cinema and see the sequel: Avatar, The Way of Water. I’m happy to report we are fully up to date on the wonderful storytelling of the masterful James Cameron. As humans, we do all have stories and experiences we can share - although possibly not on the same scale as Avatar. Storytelling needs to have a purpose and an intent - just as the Avatar franchise does. As James Cameron said, “Avatar asks us to see that everything is connected, all human beings to each other, and us to the Earth”. The need to have a clear intent is just as much the case for businesses, teams and presentations as it is for individuals. Some examples of ‘intent’ may include: As we enter this new year, each of us has the opportunity to add a chapter to their ‘book’ - to deliberately write the continuing story. If we don’t become the author of the story as we wish to tell it, the story will dictate our path for us. What is the story you’ll be telling about 2023, and what is the intent?
