Something Worth SharingValue of Time Now, this may sound like a really obvious ‘learn’, and yet I certainly need reminding of it every so often; the value of time and what you do with it. Several things happened last week - apart from celebrating another trip around the sun. I spotted on Linkedin that a chap I’d heard speak several times while I was a member of a CEO peer group had passed away without warning. Malcolm Smith was a youthful (he was just 69) stand out and much loved professional speaker - often covering topics such as delegation and time management. The outpouring within the business community has been immense. The very next day, having been left reeling, I received a telephone call from one of my oldest friends. He shared with me that a friend of ours - and someone I went to primary school with - had died suddenly a day earlier. The chap that had passed, Richard, was just 51 and was a single father to a gorgeous little lad, Oliver. Richard was also known as Sensei Richard. I’ve since read - in a similar way to the memories shared of Malcolm - an incredible array of tributes from the community that he belonged to and that shared his passion for aikido. What Richard and Malcom have helped me to re-learn is that: time is the most precious gift we each possess, is finite and can end without warning we must use time well - and to do things that bring us joy our use of time will determine our legacy and the impact on others, even after we’ve gone if not now, then when? and most importantly, as Maya Angelou once said:
“People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”
