Bite-size Importance

I’ve been trying to figure out why the visuals I create for books are so popular. Is it because they are ‘pretty colours’? Is it because of the fonts I opt for? Perhaps it’s the little drawings of characters? I guess these things all help, but actually it’s because the visuals take 100+ pages of content and synthesis it onto one singular sheet. Within each sheet, sections are clearly shown - as ‘bite-sized’ pieces. This is how we best digest information.

I wanted to understand a little more about why - now more than ever - bite-size is so impactful and important. My research led me to discover a few significant reasons that we need to focus more on offering content in bite-sized chunks:

1. it improves psychological engagement - it helps hold attention

2. it takes advantage of our natural energy ebb and flow - creating pauses for processing

3. it hacks the limits of our working memory - to digest, understand and remember

4. it creates maximum benefits through minimal input (think 20/80)

5. it fits with today’s world of overloaded information - allows small chunks of information to be at your fingertips, anytime and anywhere.

There’s a reason we love boxsets; shorter episodes break lengthy films into more digestible and entertaining bite-sized chunks. We like shorter podcasts, we respond well to summaries and ‘top 10’ lists. Creating content in bite-sized sections is critical for videos, presentations, websites, emails, articles, and do much more. If you can be more visual at the same time - even better!!

ENERGY
Focusing on an emotion or energy; a stand-out word / s

Ambition

I love this word - it definitely speaks to me! I was a little surprised by its etymology though…

The word is directly from Latin AMBITIO meaning "a going around," especially to solicit votes, hence "a striving for favour, courting, flattery; a desire for honour, thirst for popularity". It’s formed from AMB "around" + IRE "go". When we are ambitious, we must transfer this to action - to go around as needed, building connections, working, focusing and turning the energy to output.

ACTION
Something small that you can do that might make a big difference

Leading Your Life

Leadership is often thought of for sport and business, however we are all leaders - of ourselves. My action for you this week is to consider, and write down, what you feel are the most important 3 components of how you want to lead your life, e.g. with courage to keep going even in the face of adversity.

PROCESSING
A question to think about and consider (you can discuss this with someone or write your thoughts down)

“What helps you to feel balanced and stable?”

As humans, we need to feel a sense of stability and certainly - it helps us to navigate the fast and changing world around us. Of course, this isn’t always possible, so what helps you during these times to restore some balance?

Last Minute Adventures

On Saturday just gone, with the sun shining and all the household tasks complete, we jumped in the car and went on an unplanned and unexpected adventure. We travelled a couple of hours to somewhere we fancied visiting and had the best time! There was something special about the last-minute decision to go. This weeks shoutout therefore is to those little last minute adventures - the reckless “let’s just go!” moments.
