Something Worth SharingFind The Wins Last week I had a migraine. This is something I tend to encounter every few weeks or so. If I’m lucky they mean I just struggle through the day, however they can render me completely unable to function - as happened last week. Anyway, that’s not really the point - it’s more to do with what happens once the “claw” (as I affectionately refer to it) releases it’s grip of my head and face. I’m a hugely competitive person and love to “win”, to be my best and achieve all I can - it can be a blessing and a curse. When I’m in the midst of a migraine, the claw has other ideas, and winning is the last thing on my mind - it’s all about survival and waiting for the pain and nausea to subside. However, once the claw begins to ease the grip and things get back to normal, I’ve noticed that I feel almost euphoric. The relief is incredible and being able to sit up feels like a big win. It obviously doesn’t come with a medal or award, but it is a win from where I was - flat out with the lights off. For the couple of hours post-migraine, I am happy with the little wins: the ability to stand upright, see more clearly, tolerate light and noise, and engage with others. It struck me that our view of winning is based on 5 main things: Context: how things relate to circumstances, experiences and situations Perspective: how we see things - the world, ourself, others, expectations etc Emotion: how we feel about ourself and things Meaning: the purpose - what it does beyond the event or situation Gratitude: our ability to be be thankful
For some, gold is the only colour that’s good enough, where there are other people feel that they win by getting to the starting line. When we have a bad day and sh*t happens, we need to remember to deliberately look for the wins - and bring a little context, perspective, balanced emotion, meaning and gratitude to mind. I’d even say that a gold star or first place can feel even better when you have balance across the 5 things above!
