Something Worth SharingContent, Delivery and Outcome Many of you will know that have a thing for words and their meanings - I adore etymology, the study of the origin of words, and how the meaning of words has changed over the course of history. Interestingly word etymology derives from the Greek word ETUMOS meaning “true”. Whilst words and their meanings are fascinating, they are just a small part of our communication. In fact, 7% of our communication comes from our words, 38% from our tone and 55% from our physical delivery. One of our tools at GLAS focuses on: (1) content and (2) delivery. In the case of words and communication, our choice of words represent the content and the tone and body language are the delivery. The third important part of this is the outcome that is desired. Knowing the outcome (the why or purpose of the message), will change either - or both - the content and the delivery. While in the throws of puppy training, this is vitally important to understand. You need to consider: OUTCOME
Know what you want to achieve - the behaviour you’re looking for, such as getting the dog to sit or lie down CONTENT Assign a word to this - in this case it would be ‘sit’ for sitting or ‘down’ to lie down - saying ‘sit down’ is just confusing to them as it is two instructions. Getting the right word and being consistent is imperative DELIVERY Tone is everything with a dog - an instruction needs to sound like an instruction and praise must be a different tone. Body language is also key with dog training
This example may be based on a dog but it applies to children, your team, your partner, your clients, an audience…anyone. Get any one of the three wrong and you can ruin your message and communication.
