The Need To Experience

One of the many magical things about being a human is our core need to ‘experience’. At a very primitive level we need sustenance in order to survive, and yet we have Michelin starred restaurants around the world. The reason for this is because of our need to ‘experience’. Why do we adore going to the ballgame? The adrenaline of competition, being with our tribe, and the sheer exhilaration of the experience as a whole.

Humans are able to experience pleasure. Humans are also able to experience pain and sadness. When we watch great sporting moments or a charity shining the light on a cancer survivor ringing the bell - we experience by association, and can be moved to tears. The key is our constant need to ‘experience’.

What and how are people ‘experiencing’ your products, services or internal culture? There are numerous opportunities to provide people a great “world-class” experience that delights and stays in their mind. This is from providing a warm and welcoming confirmation of a meeting, the provision of a clear agenda, a personal welcome to your offices, a simple and easy sign-in process, and clean (well-stocked) facilities etc.

Disney parks are well known for making the most of the queueing experience. They have carefully designed this seemingly dull and necessary process to be an immersive part of the overall theme park experience - transforming the waiting process into a source of entertainment and anticipation. We need to experience - and it’s often the small experiences that matter the most.

ENERGY
Focusing on an emotion or energy; a stand-out word / s

Drama

Many of us love a good ‘drama’ - I refer to the ones on TV. However, real-life drama can come in many forms. The word DRAMA is from Greek dramatos meaning "action, deed; play, spectacle". It originates from drāo which meant "to do, make, act, perform" (especially some great deed, whether good or bad).

Just because there is something happening, an action or spectacle, it doesn’t mean it’s good or bad - just that something is happening. We then have a choice about how we think about it and what we do about it. Do we jump in or take a pause?

PROCESSING
A question to think about and consider (you can discuss this with someone or write your thoughts down)

“Who has shown me appreciation, and what did it mean to me?”

This could have been in a significant way or even just in passing. Do you have evidence of people appreciating you - such as ‘thank you’ notes or emails acknowledging your kindness?

The Right Amount of Choice

A friend of mine was recently sharing how they hated having too much choice. I’ve also had many situations where clients have initially felt that they didn’t have any choice at all about something. The shout out this week is when we have just the right amount of choice - not too much or too little. Too much leads to paralysis, while too little is suffocating. The right amount of choice is wonderful!
