The Power of a Clear Purpose

My ‘learn’ this week is more of a ‘reinforce’ having been with a #familybusiness that continues to do great things, despite their past. The business was founded in 2009 by a young energetic and driven guy - who successfully found his niche. This, coupled with a desire for every client to feel like a VIP saw him forge ahead and built outstanding relationships and loyalty. However, just as things were taking off, he suffered a catastrophic heart attack and passed away. This meant his retired parents had to jump in and pick up the pieces - as well as grieve for their son.

Ever since, this lovely family have worked tirelessly to build and protect a legacy for their son. I had the chance to spend some time with the now CEO - the founder’s father - and asked him about purpose and what the business really meant. After a lengthy conversation about his son and the growth ambitions for the business, we realised what it was. It was simple. The business was all about relationships. That’s what is was for - to build, nurture and support outstanding relationships. Knowing why a business matters, and what it’s all for - the purpose - in a clear way - is the only way to align people. As soon as the word appeared, it was like his son appeared. The clarity of knowing - through a simple single word - what something is really for is incredibly powerful. It allows you it to deliver it, live it, manage it, leverage it, strengthen it, make decisions based upon it and ensure it runs through every aspect of your culture.

ENERGY
Focusing on an emotion or energy; a stand-out word / s

Bond

To BOND refers to: "anything that binds, fastens, or confines", a phonetic variant of BAND.

BAND comes from Middle English BENDE meaning "bond, fetter, shackle, chain, that by which someone or something is bound; ribbon, ornament, chaplet, crown".

From early 14c. BOND was used as "an agreement or covenant" and then later as "a binding or uniting power or influence". The word is used in many way including chemicals bonding and bonding agents, the glueing together and also relationship ties. Forming ‘bonds’ between people is about connection and emotional ties that bind. Of course there’s also the another type of BOND: James Bond!

ACTION
Something small that you can do that might make a big difference

Explore

I feel like leaving the action as simply the word ‘explore’ and seeing where that takes you. Of course we can explore physically - pack our bags and go out on an adventure - and we can explore using the mind - to learn and discover. I’m just going to lay the challenge down for the week; go explore and see what happens!

PROCESSING
A question to think about and consider (you can discuss this with someone or write your thoughts down)

“When have your instincts been most valuable?”

We often discuss the importance of instincts with clients - and describe them as our internal navigation system, naturally responding to stimuli. The question for you to consider this week is: “when have your instincts been most valuable?” - and perhaps a follow on question is: “and when should you have paid them more attention?”

Go With The Flow

These past two weeks we’ve been working in Texas and Arizona - with different people and in a different environment. Many of the things around us have felt unusual, interesting, amusing…and very much apart from our normal experience. Life can do this to us all - throw things at us we don’t expect and that can feel out of our control. As someone that’s reasonably structured, I often find this unsettling, however I decided to ‘go with the flow’. Rather than fight against things, we chose to go with it. That’s my shout out, the decision to occasionally just go with the flow - it made for a much more enjoyable time!
