Something Worth SharingVital Relating Relationships are vital to us. Whether you are a highly sociable being and life of the party, or more of a wallflower, we all need people and the ability to relate. At the very basic and primal level we need to relate and bond to be able to reproduce, but almost as importantly we need others to help keep us safe. Babies - from day one - rely on adults for their protection and to be fed. They need an environment in which they can thrive. This is exactly the same role that a leader plays in a business - to create an environment in which others can feel safe, get fed (paid, rewarded and acknowledged) and thrive. This is otherwise known as the #culture. It is a basic need - simple. When we don’t meet needs, we risk decline; for humans, the decline is that of our race and the world around us, while for businesses the decline is exactly that - the organisation. As someone that works with #familybusinesses, the decline can also be family ties. Clear and agreed expectations are often key to smoothness of relationships - including the expectations we have of ourselves. Challenge
Avoiding positive challenge is not helpful, embrace it. It is essential to feel safe and to trust first - and then welcome challenges and to challenge. Compassion
To stand along side, and have the awareness of, how others feel is vital for all relationships. Commitment
Strong relationships require an equal level of commitment - to feel we’re all in and that it is reciprocal.
