Something Worth SharingPost Your Own Letter Last week I had to deliver 105 (very specific), printed sheets to my neighbours. I’m in charge of the residents association and we’re making plans for the Kings Coronation Street Party (aka any excuse for a knees up!) in May. I set out at 9am on 1st March with the prepared and folded sheets of paper and began posting through people’s doors - or more to the point, through an array of letter plates in their doors. By the time I returned home, I had managed to remove skin from my thumb, lost a nail and had red raw knuckles. The time I had posting these sheets, and my experience of chewed up hands, left me thinking about how such a simple act - getting post through to the owner of a property, just as the mail workers do on a daily basis - was so challenging. I encountered overly strong and aggressive hinges that would hardly allow it to open, letter plates so low on the door I almost had to lie down to post the sheet, letter plates with severe bristles that shredded the sheet I was posting…let’s just say there was a full array of terrible letter plates. I would estimate that 5% were ‘kind’ to the user (me). It made me wonder if anyone that owned the letter plates had ever used them themselves; I’m guessing if they had attempted to use their own letter plate that they would do something about it. User experience is often talked about in terms of website and retail experiences, however we are all users and all experience things on a continual basis. I wonder if those considering ‘user experiences’ have ever tried being 1) the user and thought about 2) the actual experience. It shouldn’t be down to expensive agencies - or your CUSTOMERS - to point out poor user experience. You can see for yourself if you try posting a letter through your own door!
