The Sum of Inclusion

This week, on the 8th March, it is International Women’s Day. When I saw what the theme was - “inspire inclusion” - I felt really sad. Inclusion is vital for us as humans; the word means "to have (something) as a constituent part". If you think back over the millions of years of evolution, we have existed in tribes and communities that are inclusive - in order for us to survive. How can it possibly be 2024 and we still need to urge people to be inclusive?

From being part of a family, to the playground, and from sports to the workplace - all of these things require us to be WITH others. We learn from our peers, we provide and receive help and support and together we can be creative, innovative and achieve far more than alone. Inclusion is a vital component of high-performing and dynamic cultures.

Inclusion doesn’t mean everyone is the same - far from it. Inclusion is about complimentary and diverse cognition. As Aristotle (Greek philosopher) once said; "the whole is greater than the sum-of-the-parts".

These words got me thinking - and perhaps the point is this; “the sum-of-inclusion creates, achieves and thrives”. I believe that the theme of #inspireinclusion goes way beyond International Women’s Day and the aim of including women - we need to all come together and protect, nurture and support everyone.

ENERGY
Focusing on an emotion or energy; a stand-out word / s

Inspire

One of my most favourite words - given it’s my #purpose word - is INSPIRE. Inspire is also the other part of the International Women’s Day theme: INSPIRE Inclusion.

The word originates from French ENSPIREN meaning: "to fill (the mind, heart, etc., with grace, etc.)" also "to prompt or induce (someone to do something)".

Tracing it back further, inspire was taken from Latin INSPIRARE which meant "blow into, breathe upon," figuratively "inspire, excite, inflame," from IN "in" + SPIRARE "to breathe".

ACTION
Something small that you can do that might make a big difference

Be With Others

Inspired by the theme above, the suggested action is to be with others - to be inclusive. It could be a very small group or a larger one, but take a little time to include someone - perhaps take a walk with a friend or arrange a gathering.

PROCESSING
A question to think about and consider (you can discuss this with someone or write your thoughts down)

“When have I felt excluded?”

I’m interested to know about the opposite of inclusion - when you may have felt excluded in a situation or in your work, school, relationships or life in general. It may take your mind back a few years, but I believe we all probably experience this at some point in our lives.
