LEARN Something Worth SharingWhere It Starts Nothing ever really starts where we think it does. My middle son is living in Canada having followed his dream to be a ski instructor. This wasn’t something he just thought of one day; Max has loved skiing since he was 4 years old. But deciding to head to the mountains and earn money didn’t start there, it started because my husband - and his dad - is his hero, and did a ski season himself. That in itself stemmed from Will going on a school ski trip years ago which was supported by a bursary…which didn’t start there. The point of this week’s learn, is that nothing ever really starts where we think it does - we can trace back to inspiration, influence, reason and stories that lead to decisions, actions and consequences. During the weekend just passed, our street was closed and we held a party - as part of the King’s Coronation “Big Lunch” initiative. The road didn’t just close of course, and the party - including DJ, ice creams, bunting and food - didn’t just happen. This was the third street party I’ve organised and third time we raised money for charity. But as I was reflecting upon the effort and organising that took place, I realised that my decision to do this also didn’t start there. When I was young, my parents lived in a road that also had a ‘residents association’ created to bring together their local community - with Christmas parties, street parties, scavenger hunts and so on. This was something that stayed with me - and inspired me to create the same for us, my family and neighbours. The link to charity was inspired by my Great Auntie Muriel who founded her own charity to support the elderly and needy of her local area - something I later became a trustee of. Nothing ever starts where we think it does. Are actions don’t, our ideas, businesses and challenges don’t, our pain doesn’t and neither do our opportunities.
