First Hand Strategies

I have worked with several personal trainers (mainly virtually due to the pandemic and their business models) and physios over the past few years - mainly because of the problems I’ve had with my left hip. Now that my hip is well on the way to recovery (thanks to a new one), I’ve taken on a new personal trainer to build strength.

I had my first PT session with my new trainer last week. The first thing he did was to show me each exercise - despite them being ‘basic’ - and talk me through the right strategy and approach. The first exercise instantly taught me that I’d been doing it completely - and without awareness - wrong. I’d been following a previous trainer’s instructional video, or so I thought. Within seconds, my new trainer corrected my technique. The second exercise was similar - he demonstrated and explained and then corrected.

Our learning styles are all different, however most people respond and develop far better through demonstration, explanation and adjustment. Learning live and in person far outweighs the delights of Zoom, Teams or virtual applications. While there are great benefits to technology, my learn is that you can’t replace human interaction, especially when trying to master a new skill!

ENERGY
Focusing on an emotion or positive energy; a stand-out word / s

Empathy

The word empathy originates from the Greek work EMPATHEIA meaning "passion, state of emotion". It is formed from EN "in" + PATHOS meaning "feeling". Empathy is to share in the feelings of others. It a basic human trait and explained - far better than I can - in the book I recommend you to read, at the end of this weeks LEAPS.

ACTION
Something small that you can do that might make a big difference

Read a Book

Many of you will already be aware that I adore books - although you may not be so aware that I only enjoy non-fiction! My suggested action this week is to read a book, of any type - either alone or with a child, perhaps. These are just 10 of the reasons that reading is highly recommended:

1. Gain valuable knowledge

2. Exercise your brain

3. Improve your focus

4. Improve your memory

5. Enjoyment

6. Improve your ability to empathise

7. Improve your communication skills

8. Reduce stress

9. Improve your mental health

10. Live longer

PROCESSING
A question to think about and consider (you can discuss this with someone or write your thoughts down)

“What happened in your past that influences you now?”

Whether positively or negatively, we often find that our experiences from the past shape and influence us now - and into the future. Typically this can be from the way we were brought up and things that happened - such as the relationship we have with money or food - or how to parent or not etc. What can you think of that continues to influence you?

Who / what I think deserves recognition, my gratitude or to be celebrated.

The Right Timing

Have you ever noticed that sometimes you can feel that you’ve done everything possible to make something happen with little effect, and just as you think of giving up - suddenly things fall into place? Timing is everything. We can plant the seeds of timing by getting to know people and opening up opportunities, but very often the key is to do with timing.

I’m shouting out this fascinating area of ‘when’ - the magical timing that sometimes we just have to wait for and be patient.
