Something Worth SharingWe See and Feel Communication My re-learning this past week has centred around communication. My daughter (aged 15) was tasked with organising care for our two young dogs during our week away. The idea was to help build responsibility and the skills needed for communicating. I should add that the kennels belong to a friend of ours! In addition to the stay, we hoped that the dogs would be hand stripped and so Emmy had made the request to my friend who is also a groomer. Unfortunately on collecting the pups, it hadn’t happened. A complete breakdown in the communication had occurred - everyone thought different things were meant with both my daughter and friend being upset about it. Very often, communication is linked to action - what needs to be done, not done or what has happened. There is ALWAYS a reason to communicate - a purpose for it, for example: to achieve / progress to instruct to inspire to educate to understand
There is something in between the act of communication and its greater purpose - something that will determine the success of the communication (communication does include sending and receiving!): how the parties involved are: SEEING: Their perspective The way they see - their world view, their self-view and the stories that are stored in their mind that create a ‘lens’ FEELING: Their emotions The way they feel about themselves, others, the situation etc
These two areas will impact our communication; what, if, when and how we communicate outwardly as well as what, if, when and how we receive inwardly. As an example, Emmy was nervous about communicating and fearful of getting things wrong, which interfered with the clarity of her communication. Equally, my friend made assumptions because she was busy and feeling overwhelmed. How we see and how we feel - at a deep level - will always influence our success, not just with communication but in every aspect of life, relationships and business.
