Something Worth SharingWhich Confidence? When I was little, I lacked confidence and would easily embarrass. I remember being painfully shy, especially around adults - even ones I knew well. I would struggle for things to say and often just nod as a response to any questions so that I could avoid conversations. However, I also recall being able to stand up in front of a room full of people and present, and would be vocal if I saw an injustice of any kind. For these occasions, I appeared to have confidence. Fast forward through a ‘few years’ (we won’t say how many!), and I have no issue in speaking to anyone and everyone, rarely lack confidence in social situations, and the shyness has definitely gone. That being said, there is no question that at times, often when sat alone, I can drift into a lack of confidence about other things - such as whether I parent well, whether I am a good friend, am a good enough wife, when I pitch for new contracts, etc. Confidence is a critical area of the GLAS methodology. Years ago I became incredibly fascinated by the subject of confidence; how it relates to entrepreneurs and leaders, to building strong cultures and high performance. To have confidence means to hold trust or reliance - so why can that both be true and untrue at the same time? Because there are different types of confidence; within GLAS we refer to 5 types that are interconnected - all of which need continuous work and consciousness. Foundational Confidence
The belief and trust in yourself in a calm and realistic way. It is not about perfection, it’s linked to your inner beliefs and balance. Relational Confidence
The confidence in others and socially. If someone is lacking in self-confidence (foundational), you will struggle to have confidence in them too. It is not about being dependent on them, but rather knowing they are capable. Progressive Confidence
Understanding that change is inevitable in life, business and relationships. We must be confident that change will ultimately lead us to adapt and progress. Perspective Confidence
In a world where unpredictable impact happens, this is the trust in an ability to control our perspective and the lens through which we see and judge these things. Resilient Confidence This type of confidence is to know things are going to be OK. Building confidence after adversity and pain is difficult but, is also essential for growth.
Confidence types co-exist, sometimes we need to force ourselves to ‘fake it until we make it’ and eventually work to overcome our doubts. Confidence is also contagious - when we see it, we feel it. Being able to understand confidence is an essential leadership quality - to understand how it impacts ourself, others and even our businesses.
