Something Worth SharingUse The Cues I have to travel along the same road a few times a week. Over the past few months this trip has become more challenging, as there are temporary traffic lights to allow one stream of vehicles to pass at a time. While sat at these traffic lights last week, I was fascinated by the fact that I was looking for the cue that it would shortly be our turn. The cue in this case was that oncoming cars would stop, suggesting that their light had turned to red and ours would shortly go to green which led to me preparing to continue my journey. Cues are extremely important - they are used to prepare, learn, improve performance, in marketing, for strategic planning, training pets, raising kids, safety - and anything that helps guide behaviour. A cue is a stimulus, event, keyword, phrases or object that can facilitate behaviour change. They not only support memory, but may also help to make the new behaviour automatic through the formation of new routines and habits. We are constantly surrounded by cues in our day-to-day lives, with us very often being unconscious of them. From the cue, we process and form an association which leads to a response. You can use this to reverse engineer and design cues by beginning with the end in mind; consider what response you’re looking for and work backwards. And as a bit of trivia for you, the word ‘cue’ was used in stage plays to indicate actors' entrances and was explained at the time as an abbreviation of Latin QUANDO, meaning "when". It was a stimulus to prompt a response and action.
