Value of Questioning

As many of us are in the throes of planning into 2022, I have also been reflecting on a number of initiatives and activities from the past year. This led me to pause and question a few things that I’ve given my time and focus to. The questions I asked myself went along the line of:

• Does it inspire others - and me?

• Does it ignite others to move forwards - and me?

• Am I being at my strongest…could there be a better use of my time, energy and focus?

• Am I being deliberate or drifting with it (just doing something for the sake of it)?

• Do I LOVE doing it?

The reason for this was to assess what I wanted to (a) take with me into 2022 (b) leave behind or (c) change.

It didn’t mean that the process and consequent decisions were easy, but they were vital. We can’t just accumulate and hoard activities on the basis of “we’ve always done them”. Not only does this drain our energy and efforts, but it can lead to burnout and overwhelm. We all need to clear out the mind and list of what we do every so often so that we can create and protect the space for the new things.

ENERGY
Focusing on an emotion or positive energy; a stand-out word / s

Bold

I’ve heard (and used!) this word quite a lot recently and so in researching a little further I found that it originates from an Old Norse word - BALLR - meaning: "frightful, dangerous".

It is believed to be formed from PIE prefix BHEL meaning to "to blow, swell”. From the mid 13th century, it developed to mean: "requiring or exhibiting courage" which is the understanding that we now have.

My personal view is that it isn’t just courage that is required, but also a clear focus and degree of inner belief and confidence to move forwards (emotionally or physically).

ACTION
Something small that you can do that might make a big difference

Dare to Intangibly Dream

At GLAS, we talk about tangible dreams (goals) and intangible dreams (purpose). Tangible dreams can sometimes lead us in a direction that prevents us achieving our true potential - for example: the creation of a certain business to a certain size within a certain timescale. However, our intangible dreams are the ones that guide us and remove restrictions - for example, to inspire.

The action for this week is to intangibly dream…to write down the thing that runs through everything and will guide you ahead. You can do this for projects, the next year, businesses, yourself etc.

PROCESSING
A question to think about and consider (you can discuss this with someone or write your thoughts down)

“What next?”

From this week’s ‘Learn’, about the Value of Questioning, one of the things that I decided to change from this year is to stop our weekly Clubhouse session. This was something that I discussed with my dear friend and colleague, Wendy Hill. We felt that when we consider the 5 questions, something was missing for us. This led to a decision to change - not remove - what we were doing, and so there will be a ‘what next?’ conversation for us.

Think about some of the areas of your life, work and relationships - and consider the ‘what next?’ question.

We do love our ‘deliberately inquisitive’ questions and so that part will remain as a central focus - and we look forward to sharing our ‘what next?’ with you soon!

The Deliberately Inquisitive Guests and Topics

We ran our Clubhouse room (Deliberately Inquisitive) for 34 consecutive weeks and enjoyed incredible discussions, each based on a simple question. We never knew where the question would lead us but we always, without fail, came out of the room with more than we entered. There were two things that allowed that to happen: the question and the guests.

My shout out is to those guests and the questions (topics) that we explored together. We talked about leadership, failures, food, memories, our heroes, our insecurities, our ‘to do’ lists…to name just a few of the topics.

A very special thank you goes to my co-host Wendy - on to our next exciting project! To Andy for his valuable contributions, to Dolores for being our constant guest, to Linnea, Paul, Jess, Lynn, Michelle, Simon…and all of the others that were part of the journey in those 34 weeks.
