Something Worth SharingStand For What Matters I caught a little of the coverage for the Emmy awards this week. Of course there was plenty glitz and glamour, incredible (good and bad) dresses and red carpet moments. However, the thing that I came away thinking about wasn’t an award, it wasn’t a dress or even one of the speeches. It was when a particular actress came to the stage to present an award. Christina Applegate walked slowly to the podium supported by a gentleman on one side and a walking stick on the other. As she did so, the whole audience of actors rose to their feet to give a standing ovation. Christina is suffering from multiple sclerosis. It was so moving. The learn here is the value of our peers, their support and acknowledgement. As Christina joked (while fighting back tears), all those standing are shaming her given her challenges with walking. There is something about the fact that the whole audience stood - almost in a symbolic way, and that they all united in this visible gesture - providing collective strength. Standing ovations are often given at the end of a performance to show appreciation - but as this situation showed, they can also quickly communicate care and support. How can we do this for others in our day-to-day lives and work? How can we better acknowledge struggle, success, achievement and difficulties? How can we make sure we unite to provide collective strength? How can we stand for what matters?
